330 ml. bottle. Bottled 2/13/12. Pours a thick, lasting, varied bubble beige head, with extensive lacing, over a slightly cloudy dark reddish brown (SRM 20) body....nose is heavy fruity malts, with plum, date, raisin, brown sugar, treacle, hints of spice.....taste is heavy sweet fruits with plum, raisin, date, leading to a harsh bitter, peach pit, spice finish......mouth feel thick, sticky, astringent, alcohol warmth present, carbonation low after the initial exuberance. This falls well into the Abt/Quad piece of the Belgian Dark Strong Ale style. The bitter finish is too harsh and lingers over much. This is probably from a badly handled bottle as neither of the hops used should do this. The net effect is that the flavors are off making for a disappointment in this particular bottle. Bottle from Albert Heijn. The beer is black colored and has nearly no head, which should be cream colored. Also carbonation is a little low. The aroma is a very rich palate of roasted malts, chocolate and coffee, and some sweetness of raisins and caramel. The taste is overal medium sweet with notes of caramel, dark fruits and a hint of alcohol. The aftertaste is a well balanced light bitter. First there is the sweetness and then a hint of the used hops is noticable. Above all, it’s very warming and the alcohol is noticable in the background. Seriously, one of the best beers in Holland. Shame it’s so expensive (€3,00 a bottle).
