3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Bodegraven. Pours a small dark brown, oily, head that dissipates halfway. Minor carbonation, might improve with ageing.
Heavy alcohol and musky barrel aromas. Syrop or port style mouthfeel. Complex mix of dark choc, dark fruits, and a sweet caramel bourbon. Would age well, and score better in 5 years time.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle 330 ml at home, into a snifter, ABV 10.8%, side to side with the Rum Barrel Aged version, bottled on Sep. 17 2013
Pours totally black, with a brown thin line forming where the beer meets the glass, plus some bubbles on the surface. No lacing, even after a swirl of the glass, nothing sticks on the glass.
Aroma of roasted malts, wood, faint alcohol, weak bourbon.
Taste is much better, quite sweet, with roasted malts, the alcohol accompanying nicely, some wood, light vanilla.
Very thick body, maybe the thickest I’ve met in a De Molen beer, or at least the thickest I can remember now. Low carbonation that fits perfectly.
Overall a great IRS, not heavy on the bourbon or wood notes though, very enjoyable.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Thick viscous radiator oil black, pours with an engorged tan head which dissapates to a decent half finger thick head. Steeped bourbon tea bag nose, roastedness is hidden by an enriched liquorice fist full of dark choc. Button down roastedness on the initial taste, bushy cooking choc buy the mouthfeel just engulfed anything but the bourbon before the finish. Heavy duty thickness, needling carbonation.
There’s a massive bitter boozy tang on the finish, it’s a wee bit too quick in approach and a massive over coffee roasted sweetness.
There’s a lot going on here, but the balance is pretty throttling at both ends of each sip. That said, I sat with this for nearly two hours and would happily have worked my way through another bottle at the same rate.
Bottle, THANKS BEN BUDDY BOY H, 10.8% bottled September 17th 2013

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
330ml bottle [10.8% abv]. Pitch black colour with late awakening, small to average, creamy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, tan head. Rich and complex dark malty aroma has notes of treacle, vanilla, leather, liquorice. Taste is initially dry dark malty with subtle sweetness, notes of leather, hints of vanilla, later the sweetness vanishes and gives way to a salty liquorice note; lasting finish, oily texture, soft and slightly sticky palate. Superb balance and good integration of the dry and sweet partitions.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Pours pitch black with a brown head. Aroma is lots of chocolate, alcoholic, bourbon, coffee and caramel. Taste is very chocolatey and bourbon. Moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter. Full bodied and thick sticky texture. Pretty good but not as good as the H&V series.
