(Bottle) Pours near black with almost no head. The aroma holds aggressive and deep coffee roast with clear notes of green chilly. Undertones of roasted oat cookies, brown malt, mint, liquorice, banana, ripe pears, brown sugar, dark chocolate, alcohol, ashtray and subtle hops. The flavour is light to medium sweet, light to medium bitter and tiny acidic with clear notes of coffee alongside undertones of roasted malt, subtle hops and alcohol. The mouthfeel round, oily and a bit numbing from the alcohol. Almost no carbonation. Light alcohol tart, coffee roasted and brown malty finish. Medium bodied.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 _angst_ (999) - Göteborg, SWEDEN - MAY 16, 2012
330 ml bottle bought @ Ølbutikken. Pours very dark brown with a very small mocha head that quickly dissipates without leaving any trace on the glass. Smell is sweet with roasted malts, sassafras, dark roast coffee, wood, liquorice, vanilla, alcohol, dark bread, banana, glue and very subtle hints of boiled vegetables. Taste is sweet and bitter with roasted malts, coffee, banana bread, prunes, grapes, sassafras, wood, grass, glue, ash and alcohol. Mouthfeel is sticky sweet, very tiny dry, flat and medium to full bodied. Finish is sweet and bitter with roasted malts, liquorice, alcohol, coffee, grass and banana. Strange but mostly good...
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Nocturne (142) - Northwich, Cheshire, ENGLAND - MAY 15, 2012
Draught at Fermentoren. Dark black with a creamy head and some initial lacing. Looks like Guinness but the similarities end there. A forceful roasted coffee aroma has me slightly concerned as a I wasn’t yearning for a coffee bomb, but I needn’t have worried, as it’s much mellower on the coffee taste-wise. Some nice chocolate and liquorice notes as it finishes. The body isn’t as big as I expected but it’s still respectable. Coffee isn’t massively my thing but it would be churlish to deny the great qualities of this beer. Coffee lovers should definitely try it.
