Really smooth coffee stout. A great example of the style. It’s nutty, creamy, and has a nice rich coffee flavor. Packs a punch, though it’s not boozy at all. Very pleasant.

Bottle from Rehills, Newcastle. An inky black beer that pours with no sort of head. It has an unusual strong chilli flavour (but with not heat or spice at all), chocolate and red fruity flavours, liquorice and tart red fruit on the finish.

7/XI/14 - 33cl bottle from De Hopduvel (Gent) @ home - BB: n/a, bottled: 31/I/13 (2014-1299) Thanks to Erwin for sharing the bottle!

Clear dark brown to purple beer, irregular beige head, unstable, bit adhesive. Aroma: lots of old coffee filter, some caramel, cocoa powder, malty touch, hay. MF: soft carbon, medium to full body. Taste: lots of coffee, overripe banana, little sugary, some caramel, sweet. Aftertaste: bitter touch, coffee, cocoa powder, pretty bitter.

Bottle sample at a tasting at tderoeck’s place. Thanks tderoeck. 7.11.14 Gent. Shear black with white ring. Lots of coffee, hints of soy sauce and smoke in the nose. Bitter, coffee and roasted with hints of smoke in the mouth. Silky texture, full body, hints of ash in the aftertaste.

from Erzbierschof - black beer with a long lasting beige foam; very roasted aroma with strong notes of mocha and hints of walnuts; pepper and vanilla; very low carbonation; robust malt backbone and a fair malt sweetness, solid earthy bitterness, decently dry and long aftertaste of mocha, coffee and brushwoods

33cl bottle poured into a snifter. Pours black with quite a bit of light coming through which is uncommon for the style and its ABV. Aroma is coffee and little else. Too extreme it smells dirty and earthy to me. Taste is more of the same with no balance of flavours just strong earthy coffee. Nothing like an imperial stout to me and not one I shall try again.

HR73 / ,17-10-14 / Fles.
