Dark brown, almost black, with a thick, rich beige head. Nice aroma of caramel and toast. Flavor is yeasty and herbalplus a lot of chocolatey, toasty and coffee flavors, too. Persistant herbal note throughout. Sampled at Springslicker’s Fish Fry.

Brewed 15 May 2008, bottled 3 June 2008, Bottle no. 225. Dark chestnut brown, with chunks on the bottom...mmm good. Some head. Aroma of burnt orange, cocoa, alcohol, and crackling pork in a caramel glaze. Malty profile, smoke and dark fruits, with that Belgian twang to the typical RIS. Considerably more lively palate than an American take on the style. Interesting beer; what I expected from a Belgian but not what you would typically expect from a RIS. Thanks to Darren for bringing this over!

750 ml bottle from Liquid Solutions brewed May 15, 2008 #201/380. Nose of chocolate, roastiness, and a little prunes and licorice (first glass was heavy in licorice but that disappeared as I worked down the bottle) Clear dark cherry brown with a big, tan, glass lacing head. Flavor is chocolate, light bitterness, and hints of coffee and alcohol. The chocolate flavors really showed as the beer warmed; guess that’s why they say to serve it at 15C (59F)!

Bottle I purchased in Chicago (Binny’s): Deep amber brown with a tan fluffy head. Dry aroma with nice yeast character- fruity and phenolic with some dry cocoa notes and prune. Fluffy light body with a dry flavor. Again there’s some cocoa in the flavor along with mild dark fruit notes (dates, but not sweet) with lots of spicy phenolics. Quite an interesting and against the grain Imperial Stout. Almost seems like the yeast strain is Belgian- but it works quite well here. Nice job. Oh, and there’s no way I would’ve guessed the high ABV.

[2600-20091127] 1pt9.4floz bottle. Shoe polish and chlorine hints in the aroma with a general mild roast. Murky, dark brown body with a quick creamy off-white head. Roasty malt has some more of that shoe polish characteristic in the flavour. Medium-full body. Good.

Appearance: Pours a dark brown body with a full, foamy, ecru-colored head. Smell: Somewhat mild aroma, with subtle hints of blackened barley, chocolate, licorice, and spades worth of good, hearty soil. Taste: Roasted malts with a flavor of dark chocolate and a mild sweetness. Small handful of spicy licorice. Slight earthy bitterness. The alcohol presence, while noticeable, is never obnoxious or overwhelming. Another helping of licorice for the warming finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation. Luscious creamy mouthfeel. Drinkability: A marvelous Dutch beer. Exceedingly drinkable for 11%.

Bottle: The aroma is very fruity with cherry and plum. The aroma also has some notes of chocolate and faint roast. Pours a "dark" brown with some orange highlights, lots of sediment, and a large soapy beige head that leaves behind some clumpy lacing. It’s a nice looking beer, but the one category I do rate for style is appearance, and this does not look like an Imperial Stout. The flavor is very fruity with plum and cherry. Moderate chocolate in the middle. There is some light-moderate roastiness along with some light citrus hoppiness. Absolutely no sign of 10.7% alcohol. Seems more like a Baltic Porter than Imperial Stout. Medium bodied with a soft creamy mouthfeel.
