Fantastic stout, dark almist black color, foam is a little thin and the bobbles hard. But the biting aftertaste of chocolate and chili makes it a big winner. Good thinking.

330ml brown bottle. Black pour with a low sitting light brown head. Nose has cocoa/rich chocolate, light spice. Taste has cocoa, chocolate, coffee, caramel, salt, bitter roasted malt. A trace of peppery heat in the throat and a bit of a hop kick at the end as well. Big body, silky smooth. Really good.

UPDATED: JUN 28, 2014 So nice I reviewed it twice! De Molen - Spanning & Sensatie Appearance: 4/5. Pours pure cola black-brown with lively carbonation but no manifest head. Very thin lacing. Aroma: 5/5/. Mmm. Smells like good, good imperial stout. Grassy-resin from the hops, sour-ish from the malts, sweetness, coffee chocolate... everything in the right balance. Taste: 10/10. Perfect. Rich chocolate start, rich coffee finish, sweet and malty and offering enough sourness to counterpoint the sweet. Palate: 4/5. Big, overwhelming start in the right way, with moderate astringency and an intense chocolate-coffee finish, with a long lingering sweetness at the back. Thick, to the point of unctutuous, it coats the mouth and wonít let go, but itís an embrace I donít mind at all. If anything the finish is too intense for me; not bitter, just *so much* coffee and chocolate lingering back there. Overall: 19/20. This one is, for my palate, absolutely world class. De Molen once again triumphs in the world of imperial stout. --- Old Rating June 20th, 2014: Aroma: 8/10. Sour and raisin-ey, sweet with some gentle bready notes. -- Appearance: 4/5. Dark brown to black pour, thin pale mocha head that dissipates within a few minutes. -- Taste: 10/10. Intense chocolate and sweetness, almost a cakey-ness. The right level of sour, and the chilli peppers and sea salt both nicely season the beer without overpowering anything. Outstanding. Palate: 3/5. Cloys like milk at the back of the throat with some peppery burning lingering. Pleasantly spicey, slightly astringent. Very good pairing with a strong pizza. Overall: 18/20. De Molen are world champions of imperial stouts and this is a great, strong entry by them into their collection. If you canít find their 666, this is a great substitute. Or pair this beer with supper, and save their 666 for dessert. No matter how you cut it, itís an excellent imperial stout. Well done, De Molen!

Bottle, shared with my wife. Dark brown with an ashy-tan head, lively, leaving lace as it settles into the glass. Dark chocolate, hints of spice and smoke, accents of capsicum, finishing with a salty note and a very small peppery burn at the back of the throat. I liked this a lot, but then I like weird "foody" experimental beers, so maybe it isnít for everyone.

330ml bottle (shared by FatPhil, thanks). Pitch black color. Tiny size, brown head, sort of stays. Milky, salty, sweet, liquorice, gingerbread in aroma. Woody, sweet, touch of coffee, orange juice? salty taste. Itís like salty gingerbread, ugh. Crisp, almost acidic bite in taste. Weird one in a weird way.

330ml bottle - bottled 2012/06, drunk review date
Oooh, thatís a pissy crotch. Not a good aroma. Mellows a bit, more roasty and sweet. Smoothish palate, but with a salty bite. Sour acidic and to be honest annoying taste. Burnt roast, but ruined by the salt. Palate too harsh. Mess. Freakshow. No likey.

Bottle (330 ml). Bottled on 11-12-2012. Black with a small diminishing beige head and no lacing. Aroma is spicy but not too hot with dark chocolate, roasted malt, alcohol and tobacco. Taste is slightly sweet and moderately spicy with dark chocolate, roasted malt, alcohol and very light bitterness. Medium to full body. Low carbonation. Warming finish. The bottle was bought recently, but itís 1Ĺ year old so the chili peppers probably have faded a bit. Not offensive, but not super interesting either.

Bottle from the Bierkoning. Opaque black pour with small light brown foam. Aroma is spicy, chocolaty, licorice, pastis, leather, tobacco. Taste is spicy, leafy bitterness, lots of tobacco, mineral, wouldnít say salty per se but definitely mineral, smoky, dark chocolate, light alcohol on the finish. Palate is med-full bodied, with light-medium carbonation, relatively dry. Nice imperial stout, a bit too dry and savory for my taste, a bit more rich sweet malts would have made it more enjoyable, a bit too savory as is. If you really donít like sweet in your stouts than this one is for you.

AROMA: plams in chocolate, roasty, coffee, alcoholic; APPEARANCE: dark brown/ dark ruby, some unattractive suspension, very brief beige head; TASTE: same as aroma (maybe eithout coffee); PALATE: middle carbonation, medium body (not thick/oily), firmly warming gullet, rather low bitterness; OVERALL: special ingredients: chocolate, chilli and salt do not make the difference here, easy drinking (for ris), not so heavy like some other rises could be, itís more like baltic porter. I appreciate it.
