On tap at European Beer Festival, Copenhagen. An almost black beer with a small, off-white head. Lots of mocha and lots of sugar on the aroma. The flavor continues in the same way, with mocha and sweetness, some alcohol and fruits and a coffee-like bitterness towards the finish. Lasting mocha in the finish, quite dryish. Full-bodied, almost sticky, and warming. Not exactly easy to drink, but very good.(080913)

75cl bottle, ABV 11,5%. Black as night, no head. Aroma of coffee, liquorice, deep roasted malts. Flavour is strong coffee all the way, liquorice, soy sauce, brown sugar, alcohol. Everlasting coffee bitter finish. Very very thick mouthfeel, extremely smooth, but barely drinkable because of the extreme bitter coffee flavour and the high ABV. The alcohol kicked in immediately.

Draught at EBF 2008, Copenhagen. Dark black and very still. Vegetable and oatmeal notes are apparent on the nose along with the fruitiness, bitter chocolate, liquorice and aniseed that combine to give an outstanding flavour. It is smooth and lovely on the tongue, despite the strength and you feel you get more from every sip. My beer of the festival for EBF.

A Mes rate: 75cl bottle thanks muchly to Menno.
Totally black with a tiny bit of beige foam right at the edge. Awesome aroma full of rich dark chocolate, a ton of fruity malt and some slight coffee notes. Some lovely Italian vanilla ice cream too. Slight roasty peaty notes give it a good solid base to launch it up the nostrils. Similarly awesome flavour but what else would I expect from De Molen. Damn this is crazy. It’s verging on chocolate milkshake. It’s sooooo thick and the total lack of carbonation makes it all the more so. The mouthfeel is pretty much Baileys actually. So creamy it coats your whole mouth and throat on the way down and just doesn’t shift. Which is a good thing as it means you can take a while between sips and just top up on what is still hanging around your gums. Awesome liquorice notes and a delicate medicinal sourness really make it. The finish is roasty as hell with some residual chalky bitterness from the dark dark chocolate flavours. Awesome stuff. Damn, I feel drunk already. Said to Duff I didn’t wanna get drunk tonight, now I’m questioning the wisdom of popping open an 11.5% 75cl bottle to start us off. Oh well...
Thanks so much Menno.
