jbeatty (948) - New York, USA - MAY 30, 2012
Bottle, 05/30/2012, thanks to Jeffo. Pours black with a massive, pillowy tan head. Aroma of sweet milk chocolate with light roast, the cognac treatment clearly present with grape/plum-like overtones, subtle vanilla popping in, and surprising note of citrus hops in the end. Taste is more conventional, moderately sweet chocolate, just a touch of cognac-influenced dark fruits, with light roast offset, coffee notes, some alcohol in the finish. Full palate, fairly carbonated, barrel notes start to build up after a few sips. Nice brew from de Molen, but perhaps not their best- flavor needs to catch up with the nose.

Aroma’s: Sweet, chocolate, roasted malts, cocoa, alcohol, light cognac (mostly retronasal) Flavor is medium sweet, alcoholic, bit ash. Strong alcohol feel, prickly & burning. Full body. Finishes with more ash, somewhat dry and roasted bitterish.

3fourths (7799) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAY 15, 2012
August 2011 bottle at Nya Tröls in Malmo. Deep brown body with a quick-forming light brown head. High effervescence requires a time of swirling agitation to bring the carbonation down to suit the body, otherwise it’s overly frothy and fizzy and the yeast phenols, present in all other high gravity De Molen beers tried before, become excessively dirty. When the carbonation meets the body the malt is presented sticky, fluffy and pillowy, leaning to the sweet side. The cognac soaked oak along with the heavy malt provide a sweetened date/plum/grape note to go with the chocolate mousse and roast. Alcohol, mentioned at 12.5%, never dominates, always playing in the background. It’s well-balanced sweetness, alcohol and malt firmness are what makes it so good. Had as a nightcap after a wonderful mackerel, cod, asparagus and beef dinner earlier, elsewhere in town.

33cl from DeMolen biership, shared with Tomaz.

Bottle, a 12% version bottled 08/11/2011. Black with a creamy light brown head. Aroma: wood, roasted, chocolate, müsli. Taste: chocolate, licorice, some alcohol, cognac, raisins, roasted, some kind of red candy. Full-bodied. Leaves me a bit disappointed after the fantastic regular version. I don’t know, the last year or so, with the new label design, the heavier De Molen beers haven’t been as impressive as they used to be.

Handbottle courtesy of Bo. Sampled side by side with the base beer. Deep brown in color with a small amount of head on the pour. Nose is full of smoke and oak, there is chocolate and some roast as well. Flavor mirrors the nose with a little more emphasis on the chocolate, tobacco, and oak. The cognac doesn’t really shine through all the much. Mouthfeel is smooth, booze is hidden well, and there is a solid amount of carbonation. Didn’t really do a lot to differentiate itself from the base beer. It’s decent, nothing to write home about.

Bottled. The aroma has roast, dark fruits, red fruits, some coffee, hint of cognac, nice and subtle. Black coloured beer with an off-white head. The taste is little sweet, bitter, has some chocolate, roast, fruitiness, bit wine. Medium-full mothfeel. Nice.
