3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
18cl bottle pours an opaque, mahogany brown with a thin, creamy, slight off white head. Aromas of ground dark chocolate, light smoke, almost like a slice of brown bread that spent two minutes too long in the toaster, malted milk balls, a little rubber, some dried pine. Flavor is bitter, both from the hops and from burnt malts, rubbery, some light smoke, dried leaves, some cherry, a little espresso, mexican chocolate. Full bodied, dry, slightly hot finish.

Intense aftertaste, very long hops bouquet and bitterness.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
ANother gem shared by Tom. Thanks! Aroma is a touch musty and oxidized, basement, alcohol, dark fruit, a touch of smoke. Pours dark brown with no head aat all. Some smoke, dark fruit, roast, light soy. Lingering light roast in the finish. Not carbonated at all. Somewhat refined and clean, unobtrusive imperial porter in many regards. FInishes a little hot, but not over the top. GOod stuff.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
In short: A slightly chocolaty, grainy and roasted stout. A typical example of the style.
How: Bottle 12oz. I didn’t not the bottling date, probably around two years of age. Bottle sent to me by my buddy ygtbsm94, thanks a lot Brad
The look: Black body topped by a very short-lived beige head.
In long: Nose is plain big fat dark malts with moderate roastiness. Taste is grainy burnt malts, cocoa powder, burnt black cake, some tar notes, old coffee filter. Nothing fruity in this beer. The carbonation was a bit too relaxed but that’s probably because of the age of the beer. I wanted to drink it side-by-side with a bottle of the Reserva version and I probably waited a bit too long. Finish is surprisingly dry with the roastiness and coffee notes taking over. Totally different from the Tsarina Esra Reserva version I had side-by-side. The Tsarina really doesn’t stand out in the sea of typical roasted big black beers, it is generic but nonetheless enjoyable. Glad I was able to try it. Not sold in North-American so I can thank the internet for this one, it is because of the internet that I’ve heard about this beer and also because of the internet that I’ve heard about all those newspapers going bankrupt.

Bottle from De Molen, Bodegraven, Holland, consumed 25.09.11 Pours very dark brown actually its probably black to all intents and purposes. I actually get some hoppiness on this one, but it is a heavy beer, roasty and with a lovely smoothness, some chocolate and a little praline and dried fruit. Good stuff. A7 A3 T8 P5 Ov15 3.8
