kramer (1864), sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 21, 2008 12 oz bottle, via jbrus. Pours a very dark brown body with just a few large bubbles clinging to the outside of the glass. The nose is roasty and smokey with lots of burnt malt and a hint of alcohol. A little bit of hoppiness as well. The flavor is heavy roast with some smoke and soy oxidation notes. A little bit of alcohol, but not much for an 11% beer. Chocolate, cocoa, maybe even a bit of leather. A lot going on here. Mouthfeel is perfect for me, very minimal carbonation gives it a great viscous oily smooth texture. Overall, very nice, just my kind of beer. A little bit of an odd ball for a Baltic, not quite as much on the licorice that I like, but I give it credit for being a little unique.

Aroma is dark malt-roasty, slight vegetal, dark fruit. Taste is vinuous, dark malt-roasty, slight vegetal, dark fruit, some salt/acidic. Thanks dkachur/Dan for sharing. DA (2376), Portland, Oregon City, Oregon, USA Aug 13, 2008 RBSG 2008. Pours dark brown with a soft tan head that fades fast. Very smoky and earthy, heavy burnt flavors give an impression of BBQ’d steak, some charred hefty concoction. Finish has a touch of saltiness, that when mixed with the charred flavors brings out a touch of soy sauce. Immy (1547), Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA Aug 11, 2008 Richmond Summer Gathering. Bottled 1NOV07, #458, courtesy of dkachur. Black with no head. Mild nose, roasty malt, chocolate, raisin, a whiff of smoke. Excellent body - slick and satiny. Slightly burnt malt flavors, chocolate and a touch of licorice. Just a bit of saltiness in there somewhere. Excellent! The_Beer_God (2827), Newport News, Virginia, USA Aug 9, 2008 Bottle at the Williamsburg Gathering courtesy of dkachur. Labeled #458. Near black dark brown pour. Absolutely no head on this except a larger bubble or two. Nose is soy sauce, roasted malts, salt, dark chocolate and cocoa. Taste is salty and soy sauce-like with more roasted malts, slight burnt coffee and light dark fruit. Body is near flat but has a nice slickness and is velvety smooth going down. Ends with hops and licorice, soft chocolate, soy sauce, and some odd herbalness. A unique Baltic porter! dkachur (723), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Aug 7, 2008 Bottle #458 courtesy of bierkoning.
