UPDATED: DEC 1, 2012 On draft at 1st Borefts Beer Festival, Bodegraven. Completely dark appearance, beige head. Very complex nose, chocolate, coffee, malts. Very complex flavor, some sweetness, nicely balanced. I like it eeven a lot more than the regular version (altough that one was very young). Absolutely fantastic. Re-rate: bottled, number 622 bottled Feb 19th 2009, sampled Dec 2012. I didn’t think it was possible, but it actually got even better after 3.5 years. Wow...

Bottle trade with wavers1. Terry, you’re a God, and probably my favorite trading partner. Thank you. This beer is God-damn incredible. Color is a brown-black with ruby highlights and no head. Nose is rife with port, plum, strawberry, unbelievable malts, great character from the wood (which itself was imported from Elven Country) and a very vinous, ephemeral character. Flavor is the fruit and wood mentioned above, topped off with a beautiful dark grape old port character that is just absurd. Like a chocolatey, brandy-soaked Alexander the Grape. Just unbelievably balanced and possibly the best wood-aged beer I have ever had.

UPDATED: APR 20, 2010 Cask@Brewpub. Amazing aroma. Really unbelievable. Sweet, strong, coffee, sweet chocolate, subtile oak, lots of fruits. No head, shiny, very dark brown, thick. Sweet, complex flavor of fruits, coffee and chocolate. Full and smooth. And ... it was still way too young. I’m really looking forward to trying this in a couple of months again.

Cask (gravity) @ Great British Beer Festival, GBBF 2008, Earls Court, London, England SW5.
This to celebrate my rating #4900 on ratebeer. Clear dark black color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly dimimshing, beige head. Aroma is heavy malty, roasted, caramel, chocolate, cream chocolate, licorice, vanilla, alcohol. Flavor is heavy sweet and bitter with a long long duration. Body is full, texture is oily - creamy - syrupy and so smooth, carbonation is flat. This is a beer that Mrs. fonefan loves and me also. It is so powerfull and complex - balanced - impressive.. Very very nice .. It is not for lager boys.... ;o)) It was my first and last beer the first 2 days on GBBF, Mrs fonefan did not drink much else the second day ... ;o)) Lovely work Menno, you are one of the best ! nip courtesy of deflagro, thanks a ton! nice thick, dark brown pour with a thick creamy brown chocolate-milkshak- foam head that has surprisingly good retention. nice aroma that is very dougy and yeasty, notes heat and gunpowder, notes of citter cocoa, charcoal, vanilla and oak are pleasant. the mouthfeel is thick and chewy, nice and warming but not too much detectable heat, more of an afterburn. notes of tobacco, smoke, sweet yams, prunes, clove, cinnamon, and figs all show up. thick and sweet at first, slightly drying and bitter in the finish, very nicely balanced. vanilla extract notes mixed with a premium cigar and blackstrap molasses, yummy stuff! a nice strain of yeast, has nice lager notes present, but not overpowering.

Bottled @ BBF. Cloudy brownish color, medium off-white head. Aroma of chocolat and coffee, but also fruity red wine. Perfect balance in taste between the roasted coffee from the tsarina esra and the vinous notes of the barrel aging. Awesome stuff.

GBBF, Trade Day, 2008 Gravity cask (oak). Musty and musky - touches of warm plastic. Wonderful aroma. Warm, soft mouthfeel - very rich and coating. Warm treacle. A gorgeous beer.
