3.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Thanks to Jeffo. Tasted 09/12/2011. Deep amber chestnut pour, nearly still, but with an impressive syrupy thickness, legs of liquor ringing my glass. Big bourbon in the nose, with oak, vanilla, caramel, and malt undercurrent with banana bread, dried fruits. Flavor is sweet, perhaps overly so, fruity with prominent orange, sticky caramel, a dash of bourbon, ending with raisins, licorice, and big alcohol hotness. Syrupy in the mouth, great to sip and share, but quickly overwhelming. Overall I have to give credit for the overall complexity of whats going on here, especially in the aroma, but perhaps a bit too sweet and liqueur-like in the end to be truly great.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
0.18l bottle shared with The Crew. A clear caramel brown body with a small almost not worth mentioning bubbly head. Aroma has lots of honey! Sweet heather honey and tones of straw, nuts, dates, rum raisins, alcohol and some woody chocolate hints. Really nice! Slick and sticky mouthfeeling and not much carbonation. Lovely sweet flavors; dates, honey, alcohol, deep candy sugar and lots of crystallized sticky caramel blended with chocolate-tones. Fantastic stuff in this little clear bottle (why a clear bottle on this kind of beer?)

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from Ølbutikken, shared with BBGTC. Pours a clear, cognac-hued brown body with no head, out of the tiny, clear glass bottle. For a wax-sealed BW weighing in at 16,2 % ABV and obviously meant for storage, it’s a weird choice by De Molen to put it in a transparent, clear glass bottle... Anyway; aroma is deep caramel and bourbon tones, wood, fortified wine, booze and Norwegian "brunost" (brown goat cheese) with hints of alcohol (well hidden though!) and toffee. Very nice and utterly pleasant. Taste is condensed caramel, raisins, bourbon, cream, toffee, wood, hints of booze and milk chocolate. Dates and dark candy sugar tones along with hints of honey comes through in the aftertaste, which is long, complex and makes for a great sensual joyride in the mouth. Thick mouthfeel without going overboard into stickyland. Very sweet but still a great beer.

3.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle 1540 of 1722. Aroma begins crossing the eyes and burning the nostrils but mellows with time in the glass. Molasses, pepper, maple syrup, fusel alcohol and a certain brinyness. The flavor dangerously masks ABV. Vanilla, gooey caramel, Mrs. Butterworth, cake batter, and butterscotch. Like two different beers when rating the nose and flavor. Syrupy and sticky.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle… This beer rocks!… Hazy caramel-colored ale with no head. The luxuriant bouquet is a swirl of caramel, vanilla and brown sugar with hints of cinnamon and bourbon. Full-bodied with a syrupy mouthfeel and soft carbonation. The flavor is overflowing with caramel, brown sugar and a wonderful, mysterious fruitiness. Layers galore - complex as Hell. Not too boozy; not too sweet. No abrupt finish here; just a peaceful, satisfying slow-fade. Big-time thanks to darkguardian for sharing this world class brew!

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Oh HELL yea!!!! Thanks to darkguardian for sharing this gem. Murky brown pour with no head. Booze, dark fruit, caramel malt, and vanilla aromas. Wow, what a bad ass barley wine from De Molen with all the usual suspects caramel malts, brown sugar, dark fruits, and a little cinnamon added to the mix for good measure. AWESOME.....

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: NOV 14, 2012 Update: 14 Nov ’12:
Had this again during the ZZT V afterparty and discovered it much deserves a better rating. Appearance is the same. The aroma’s of bourbon and wood (a bit cognac like) blend well with the sweetish body, and there aren’t so many of the madeira aromas. It’s quite a difference with the beer I had before. Like!
Orange brown beer, very slight white/yellow head.
Aroma of caramel, madeira, port, raisins and malts. Flavour sweet. raisins, madeira, figs. Finish starts sweet and leads to a slight bitterness. Hides the ABV well.
The bottle was somehow mistaken for a triple. The strong madeira was a huge surprise. Took us some time to realise this error: as the abv is so well hidden, our first thoughts were of long aging.
