3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
(Bottle, In de Wildeman, Amsterdam, 16 July 2011) Black colour with huge, beige head. Roasted, malty, hoppy nose with pine needles, wild yeast, dark bread, chocolate, sweaty horse and some saison hints. Roasted, hoppy, funky taste with notes of pine needles, grapefruit, roasted malt, wild yeast (or saison yeast?), barnyard and a hint of Ajax kitchen cleaning. Slightly more than medium body, quite dry and slightly sourish. Quite weird beer, but what would you expect from a wine barrel aged porter with bret and loads of citric hops (brewed by De Molen as well). Still, very nice stuff (that was expected to).

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Sampled from tap @ Copenhagen Beer Festival 2011: Pours a murky dark brown near black body with a small islandy tanned head. Lovely roasted aroma with lots of dark chocolate, smoke, citrus and some hops. Thick and chewy texture, softly carbonated and really full-bodied. Flavors are ashy as hell, with lots of roasted chocolate, coffee, espresso, vanilla, dark fruits, some acidic and sour yeasty notes that I really like and it ends with more chocolate before it’s leaving a nice acidic, ashy and mild bitter aftertaste. Really really good and complex flavors on this little thing.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle sample @ Copenhagen Beer Festival 2011. Pours a murky mahogany brown body with a medium off-white top. Not exactly looking good, I must say... Aroma is a smooth blend of brett nuances and leathery coffee tones. In the mouth, it starts off as a porter and gradually ends up more like a lambic! That’s pretty much how to describe it. :-) Well executed and a very drinkable experiment from De Molen, who seemed to be among the crowd favorites at the festival; I missed several beers and will be more on point at their stands the next time! :-)
