Bottle. Fairly solid black colour with a huge creamy tan head. The aroma is dark roast to burnt malts, chocolate, light coffee, grapefruit, pine, floral notes. The flavour is sweet dark malt with bitter chocolate and coffee, followed by fresh hop flavours of grapefruit and grassy green notes. Bitter cocoa-like finish. The body is medium and the texture is creamy. Balanced and really another very good beer from de Molen. This is a few months old, would like to try this really fresh as the "black" side of this beer is taking over a little.

Bottle. Sweetish aroma with a bit of chocolate and slightly floral hops. Smooth chocolate flavours with a bitter finish. V drinkable for the ABV.

Part of an IPA platter. This was a beauty. What it lacked in the nose and the beginning, it made up for in the middle and the finish. Lovely hop flavors that build and subsequently linger. Always enjoy that in IPAs that are darker. Its not a hop bomb, but amply hop flavor. So many black IPAs in the market are hop bombs, but they ignore the "black" / malt aspect of the whole proposition. This one does not. Balanced and enjoyable.

UPDATED: JUN 4, 2015 Tasted again and liked it much better the second time around so updating my review. Strong aroma and palate of roasted barley. Very bitter, lingering, and sits in the back of the throat for a long time. Thick and slightly sweet on the nose. But where I found it double sided last time - was it a porter or an IPA - this time I really enjoyed it.

Keg at Birmingham Beer Bash 2014. Dark and delicious. Rather more sweet coffee and choc than hops, AFAIrecall. But still lovely stuff.

Draught at Roundhouse. Pitch black-brown, opaque but not thick, tan thin bubbly creamy head and big legs. Smells of bitter dark crisp malt, leather, bitter hop, bit of grassy yeast. Tastes of very dark malt (more bitter and ashy than roasted), some dark fruit and liquorice/anise but balanced by deep, big bitterness. Palate is smooth with frothy spicy finish. Very bitter and burnt without tasting sour.

UPDATED: JUL 24, 2014 Tap at Tipping Point. Thick opaque black pour with foamy tan head. Deep roasted malty aroma - cereal, coffee, some hops. Sweet roasted flavor - with a good amount of hoppy bitterness. Rich without being heavy - good amount of carbonation. Bitter finish. Not the usual black IPA profile - more stout-like body, almost like a very hoppy stout. Great - would definitely get again.

Black, targe tan head. Some specks, as it was a bottom pour. Aroma a bit roasty, chocolatey, some berry. Similar taste. A bit more spicy later, some ginger, dry and very burnt. Not shining, but improves down the sample.

Pours black, tan head. Nose is berry coffee, pine, strawberry. Flavour is same with that strawberry flavour developing through the finish. Finish is semi-sweet. Fairly oily.

Bottle in the Hemelvaart Beer Cafe, Bedale. Pours mahogany with a tan head. Good bitter hoppy flavours. Fairly spicy with resinous notes. The hops are much more at the forefront than the roast malts, but there’s some chocolate flavour in there. Very nice.
