Chocolatier Kees Raat created the Cacao Beer in collaboration with brewery De Prael, based in Amsterdam. An elegant combination of the freshness of beer and the exciting aroma of Cacao, produced with organic ingredients. Cacao Beer: a handcrafted, dark and amber colored bitter, with tones of cocoa and caramel. Ingredients: Water, malted organic barley and wheat, hops, yeast and extract of cocoa bean shells.

This pours a very dark brown color with a solid even layer of beige foam. Nose has a deep dark chokolate aroma accompanied by some raisin and caramel. Taste is sweet at first but is quickly followed by a deep lasting bitterness. Carbonation is medium but feels very soft due to the small bubbles. Otherwise palate is quite rich and creamy. Overall this is one of the better chokolate beers I’ve tasted, could be a bit less bitter though.

Bottle 33 cl. Courtesy of fonefan. Pours a reddish brown with an off-white head. Overripe dark fruit in the nose. Medium body, again some dark fruits, roast and a little phenols - while I don’t really pick up any cocoa. 060413

Bottled from Metropolitan. Dark brown color, medium creamy brown head. Aroma of belgian yeast, lots of caramel and a hint of chocolat. Basicly a belgian double with some extra cocoa. In taste pretty much the same: caramelly belgian double styled beer with a soft hint of chocolat. Finishes rather dry and with some cocoa-bitterness. The cocoa nibs come out gentle and the balance of the beer is ok, but there’s a bit too much belgian yeast esters in this one that overpower most chocolat present.

33cl Bottle from Metropolitan, Warmoesstraat, A’dam. Deep dark brown colour, dense creamy light beige head. Aroma of bitter chocolate, hard roasted malts, cocoa, wheat. Flavour is light sweet, cocoa, bitter chocolate, quite dry, hard roasted malts, bitter finish. Light to medium-bodied, smooth. Dry. Between a dubbel and a porter, quite a nice beer.
