brentfeesh (1030), Gadsden, Alabama, USA Jan 28, 2008 750 bottle thanks to John. Orange pour with a solid head and nice looking carbonation. Tart aroma with apple, pear and vinegar. The flavor is somewhat disappointing in that the flavors are dull and nothing really stands out. You do get apple, pear, and hints of wood. It is carbonated lightly and this comes across as lack luster on the pallet. Medium body and wet mouth feel. Just boring. I think this was the Surly Bird. Sregnar35 (729), Rotterdam, New York, USA Jan 14, 2008 Was expecting a flemish sour, so I was a bit dissapointed, but it’s still tasty. Very fruity and biting yeast, thick head, great bouquet. kmweaver (2396), Sebastopol, California, USA Jan 12, 2008 750mL bottle, Pin Nun variety, courtesy of artusory. Thanks, Ryan! Pours a hazy, lemon-golden color; fluffy white head with fine-bubbled lacing and solid retention. Good amounts of overripe yellow fruits and yeast and Belgian sugar in the aroma. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: very intricate, well-attenuated Belgian profile: complex yeast character, Belgian sugar, and bananas; a slight amount of pepper and yeastiness; this is a gorgeously well-made beer, and yet it’s just not that engaging; lengthy, yeasty and Belgian sugar in the finish; sweet and slightly overripe. bleeng (587), Spring near Beersel, Texas, USA Jan 5, 2008 750 bottle bought in Kansas City MO. Reinaert Wild Ale. Pours hazy gold with a small, lacy head. Nose is musty, funky, horse-blanket, brett?? Nose of a saison, not a strong ale. Taste of spices, funkiness, wheat, yeast, nice hop profile, alcohol is present but not overwhelming. A bit sweet but bitter on the end. Nice, foamy, full mouth. Almost a summer beer despite the alcohol level. This is an excellent beer-this is one of the Belgium styles I like best-better than the candi sugar sweet beers that are predominent in Belgium. I’ll buy more of these next time I’m in KCMO. watchnerd (22), San Mateo, California, USA Jan 1, 2008 Demon Fish, 750 ml bottle. Fruity aroma, hot much hopiness evident, but a bit sour, almost like a weak lambic. Refreshing, family who don’t normally like beer enjoyed it. MikeF (528), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Dec 22, 2007 broad sour, earthy, aldehyde, and sweet aroma. amber golden, opaque with a clean white moderate sized head. A mildly sour flavor which is moderately sweet and wheaty. Finishes with a somewhat greater sour component. No alcohol off flavors present. Perfectly carbonated. NYMojoMan (12), Arden, North Carolina, USA Dec 19, 2007 A – Poured a 55°F 750 ml bottle from 2005 into a Magic Chouffe Tulip Glass. It has a hazy golden colored body. A slight fluffy white head made up of varying sized bubbles quickly dissipated. Some lacing is apparent.
S - Brett Barnyard Funk right away in the nose with some sweetness and tart citrusy meringue lime vanilla cookie character. Some acidic (even slightly medicinal character in the nose) Two other people noted the smell of goat urine. Man I love that funky little bacterial God Brett! Perhaps some pedio as well.
T – Spicy fairly sweet and some spicy hops are the first flavor. The hops signal the coming of the Brett symphony(Taste 2). More subtle than I would’ve guessed on the nose though. The brett folds in with a horseblanket lime meringue, then intensifies, as an almost medicinal chemical taste (Man though the hops 50-55 ibu really play well with the funk) , after you swallow the alcohol appears as a nice warming sensation in the chest and back of the throat comes in very pleasantly.
M - Medium bodied with some Astringent carbonation. Mediumly carbonated. 9% hides really well.
D - De Proef has really done some nice things. I’d love to taste all of these beers in a vertical sort of tasting . I think this may be my favorite so far. Very interesting is the combination of hops, brett funk, and a cardboard kind of oxidation as the alcohol fades (not unpleasant) I am a big fan and look forward to more excellent beers from De Prouf.
please can we have ratebeer seperate entries for all of these beers (They are very different) awaisanen (1279), Irvine, California, USA Dec 15, 2007 From a 750mL Bottle, Pig Nun, Fall 2004. Pours a cloudy pale gold color with a fleeting finger of white fizzy head. Mild pineapple and mango brett aromas mingle with some more earthy, musty barnyard funk. There’s definitely an intriguing pedio character coming through as well, manifesting itself as a sweaty, relatively young soft goat cheese. A gentle wheat creaminess and light citrus lemon zest accompanies. Medium bodied, lightly carbonated mouthfeel that falls apart quickly with a flabby, fatty texture. Stale wheat flavors and restrained musty horseblanket up front on the palate with a touch of acidity. Could use more sourness to help sharpen up the flabbiness of the palate some. Some of the funky cheese characters come through on the back end, along with some stale hay flavors. Interesting brett characters; these are the best part. Unfortunately, the rest of the beer doesn’t seem like a solid enough foundation to let these dimensions carry this trait enough for the overall impression to be high.
