emerica56 (575), Bristol, Rhode Island, USA Sep 2, 2007 This beer pours a hazy orange with excetent head retention and laceing. There is a sweet smell of bitterhops, minor malt, rasberry flavors, and hints of clove. As you drink it there is strong hints of clove and bitter tart flavors. The after taste is very bitter and sticks around for a while. It also has a minor jerkey smell and flavor as you drink it. Immy (1912), Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA Aug 28, 2007 C&C 750. Judging by the picture, this is the "Rat Rider" version. Hazy orange with a big off white head that descends rockily. Very interesting nose - barnyard scents, a bit sour, green apple, yeasty, bretty, lots going on here. Body is on the thin side of medium. Flavor is somewhat less interesting than the nose promised - Mildly dry, light sweet apple, yeasty, lightly sour, some white pepper notes. A bit of herbal hop bite in the end. Very pleasant, but could’ve been a big winner if the flavor fulfilled the promises made by the nose. Optigon (561), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Aug 27, 2007 Pours cloudy and orange with a large, white, fluffy head. Aroma is sweet, spicy, with some vanilla. Somewhat green smelling. Mouthfeel is light and thinnish. Flavor has a bit of caramel, grape, with a bit of an overbearing alcoholic burn. A little harsh. EithCubes (2140), Indiana, USA Aug 25, 2007 Rating no. 1300. Bottled as Reinaert Flemish Wild Ale. A cunning fox indeed! Vaguely sweet, vaguely yeasty with a small dose of the kind of funk that reminds me of spaghetti + sauce. Vague Rodenbach reference in there somewhere. Touch of honey and flowers. Murky golden pour with strong visible carbonation and a big, fluffy, rocky off-white head which creeps up the side of the glass. Dry, slightly vinous taste, great creamy yeastiness with just a touch of grit. Fullish medium body, smooth enough with a little heft from the alcohol, finishing yeasty and spicy with a splash of nutmeg and that delectable hop funk. Dry, yeasty aftertaste. Some Saison notes but sans the sweetness. Definitely feels "wild" - nature’s nuances all over this. Bretty notes push this over the top; on a different day, this could easily score 4+. A very subtle beer, and there’s a lot here to like! rudolf (1734), Buffalo, New York, USA Aug 20, 2007 Slightly cloudy orange, white pillow head. Nose is earthy balsamic, some herb I can’t place, leather, grapes, sweet fruit, smarties, orval. Flavor is lightly sour but very funky horseblanked. Quite dry for a second then fruit, malt, alcohol. Brett reappears at the end with a dry funky cherry pie & orange rind. JCB (1716), Durham, North Carolina, USA Aug 6, 2007 Demon Fish, seven fiddy. I just love De Proef products, and these Flemish wild ales are tops in my opinion. I’m not quite sure I can distinguish the variations between the different versions of the beer - since I don’t have them often enough - but I love the way they balance the earthy spice of a good saison with the funk of a fine sour. This bottle’s got about a year on it, and I definitely notice a mellowing of the sours - giving the beer a rounded, almost melon-like quality - and an accentuation of the saison spice. Just damn good, and gorgeous looking to boot. jrob21 (1252), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Aug 4, 2007 cloudy yellow/orange color with a big white head. now i know what they mean when they say funky toe cheese. guess that’s the wild in this wild ale. big apricot, funk, must aromas. slight sweetness some citrus flavors. decent once you get past the smell. RedHaze (370), Where the hell am I?, Nebraska, USA Aug 4, 2007 (Pig Nun) 750ml bottle.
Pours a very pale yellow with a fluffy two finger head that settles gently to a thick head. The remaining foam leaves a thin webbing of lace behind.
Smell; very wild nose here, with some barnyard funk, hay and dry yeastiness. There’s some mild undertones of some light fruits, and some sweet malts.
Taste; that barnyard funk comes across in the flavor with mild horse blanket and old hay. But there’s also a little bit of vinegar in there, with a bit of a lactic quality as well. The fruits are light, but they offset the funk just wonderfully, and peppery spiciness in the finish.
Mouthfeel is a touch thinner than I would have liked, and to be honest this beer is a bit on the dry side. That probably only helps make this feel a bit thin. The drinkability is just great though.
Edit: once this gets close to room temp the fruits come out a little more which adds a little more sweetness to this, and the mouthfeel seems to be a touch more full.
