thegreenrooster (1811), St.louis, Missouri, USA Apr 26, 2007 Reinaert wild ale. Pour is a orange with a small fizzy white head. Aroma is very doughy and yeasty. Flavor is bready but very tart and citric. Some earthyness and creamy yeast show up in the swallow. I thought this would be more sour but this is not a Flemish sour as i was expecting. Still its a typical but tasty Belgian ale. fishingnet (1045), Brandon, Florida, USA Apr 20, 2007 Updated: Jul 31, 2007750ml bottle ( Spoon Whacker and Pig Nun) from Kingdom Liquors Brandon, Fl. Pours a clear golden with a large white head that leaves good lacing. Aroma of barnyard, leather, and the smell of my underwear after a long day of working outside. Taste is sweet malt, super funk, leather, barnyard, and earthy hops. The taste changes in my mouth so much that I’m getting confused. The Pig Nun was more bitter but the wonderfull funk of wild yeast dominated. Not for everyone but that just leaves more for me. GG (1613), NorCal, California, USA Apr 13, 2007 NorCal tasting Apr 07 - This was a really interesting beer, but it has of room for improvement. A horsey aroma with some banana and apple juice. Appearance is golden in color, cloudy with a super foamy head. Taste is horsey, spicy, fruity with some sweet malt notes. This is almost like a tripel meets flemish sour (maybe that what the brewers wanted?). A very unique beer. Flavors and aroma were a bit subdued. Perhaps it it were kicked up a notch it’d get a higher review. cyanescens (156), Seattle, Washington, USA Apr 10, 2007 Had it as Reinaert Flemish Wild Ale. This ber has spice to it. Smooth, yeasty. Couldnt put my finger on it right away. But fruity notes were orange with a bit of spice. aubreya (676), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Apr 8, 2007 Updated: Jul 5, 2007Surly Bird: The color was golden/orange with a lot of sediment. The head was fizzy, off white, and creamy. The aroma was sour/tart, grapes, earthy, yeasty, and some spice. The flavor was hoppy, earthy, sour, and a little bitter. It was not as tart as I expected it to be. The ibu was higher than your typical flemish sour ale. The palate was smooth and the finish, sour/bitterness.
Pignun: The color was golden orange. The head was fluffy, foamy, creamy, off-white, med-bodied, and laced well. The aroma was tart, dry, fermented fruit, and grapes. The flavor was tart, sour, alcohol, dry, strong. The palate was medium bodied and smooth. The finish was tart, dry, and warm. emacgee (1859), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Apr 8, 2007 Updated: Oct 27, 2007Surly Bird: Poured a hazy peachy gold with a thick creamy egg shell white head. The aroma was sweet, tart, spicy, yeasy, some cherry, fruity. The flavor was spicy, tart, yeasty, showed alcohol, slightly fermented fruit, plum at the end. The palate was crisp with warm alcohol and dry hops. The finish was warm and harsh.
Pig Nun: Poured a hazy amber with a thick creamy off white head. The aroma is sweet and tart, light citrusy hop, dry, vinous. The flavor is tart, a little dry, spicy, a tad sour, a little acidic, and mellowed fruit. The palate is warm and tart, dry. I enjoyed this a little bit more than Surly Bird because it was less
dry.
Spoon Whacker: Poured a bright hazy golden brew with a medium frothy white head. Lightly acidic aroma, tart grannysmith apples, sour, slightly citrusy. The flavor was tart with an acidic bite, tastes like it has some Saaz hops, some grassy noble hop, the 35 IBU’s show up as a waxy bitterness and the 9% is there too. Overall a bit disappointing on the palate but fairly nice on the nose. SSSteve (2049), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Apr 1, 2007 Updated: Oct 12, 2008SPOONWHACKER - horseblanket, olive, aroma with some hops. hazy gold with a large foamy white head. flavor is horseblanket, hops, marshmallow. warming alcohol in finish.
PIG NUN - bright gold in color with a large foamy white head. horseblanket, hops, and earthy flavors. light bodied. lively mouthfeel. very musty which i don’t care for.
DEMON FISH - dark gold with a small white head. horseblanket, musty aroma. not really any different than pig nun except a little less hops in flavor. the musty flavor overpowers everything and tastes like green olive juice. not a fan.
REINAERT - a clear gold with very nice lacing under a medium sized creamy white head. hoppy, bretty aroma. flavor is brett, floral hops, apples. i don’t mind this one. not whether i acquired a taste for brett since i rated the above beers several years ago or this one is just plain better. anyway the scored rating is for the reinaert.
mjg74 (1995), La Mesa, California, USA Mar 28, 2007 Bottle(Reinaert) from BevMo, La Mesa. Pours a dark golden color with a white head. Aroma is like a cross between a sour and a dry spiced yeasty BSA. Sour flavors right up front. Followed by some yeastiness. Some spiced dry peppery notes mixed in with some sourness. Alcohol is well hidden. Interesting brew.
