BeerBellyT (15), West Paterson, New Jersey, USA May 5, 2006 Hmmm, sweet and spicy fruit taste, creamy yellow pour, creamy head that dissapates fast, i’m sorry i bought only 1 bottle. Took a bottle to a BYOP Mex restuarant in Montclair NJ. great match with Mex food. ChazMania (408), Pasadena, California, USA May 1, 2006 Bottled as Reinaert Flemish Wild Ale. This tastes amazing. It pours a lemony straw color, head dissapates quickly. I’m still learning my way around these Beligian styles. For a 9%er I can’t taste the alcohol much. There is a crispy and balanced flavor to this, I will certainly buy some more! damienv10 (108), Chicago, Illinois, USA Apr 28, 2006 Updated: Jan 29, 2007
Demon Fish 2006 or 07? This must have just been released as the advertisement still says release date TBD. It does smell a bit like a monkey that has rolled in hay and apricots. Crisp and round on the palate, this brewer gets the carbonation just right. Muted flavors at first of orange and apricot. The bulk of the flavor comes on the finish with more barnyard and stewed plum as well as some very woody hops. There is also a slight astringent taste that might have come from wood or the hops that is a bit unharmonious. I’ll have to try this again. For now though I’ll stick to the Pinhead and keep the rating as is for it.
Pinhead 2005. Golden straw in appearence with a loose head that goes away completely. Great nose of light horse blanket, cotton candy, sweet & sour apples and vanilla. Crisp and medium on the palate. Vanilla is the first flavor followed by apple pie, orange, and then slightly piney woody hops. Great balance of sweet and bitter, something most Belgian strong ales lack IMO. The reason I like this brew so much is because its unique nose and taste. Very original.
Surly Bird 2005. Opaque golden orange with a nice white head that sticks around and good lacing. Sour horse blanket, pine, and a hint of sweet plum/raisin on the nose. Crisp and medium on the palate. Horseblanket, orange peel, apricot, and pine tar round out the flavors with a nice hard bitter finish at the end. I know the description shows this having less IBUs than the Pinhead, but I think its much more bitter. I prefer the Pinhead, as its a bit more balanced and the flavors blend a bit more harmoniously. Still, this is a great offering.
Pig Nun. Pours golden with an orange hue. The white head is tight and small with great lacing. The nose is of sweet plum, orange, clove, and dominating horseblanket. On the palate its fairly round with just enough carbonation to keep it from feeling flat, that’s good beer making. The flavors are mild orange, clove, and cinnamon. It has a long finish that starts with light hoppy bitterness which eventually leads to sweet oak and vanilla. Overall, I’d give it a 4.1 GreatLibations (1440), Last Supper, Arizona, USA Apr 24, 2006 Pours pale yellow with a quick white froth and few residual effers. Aroma of bruised banana and cedar wood. Light nectar. Flavors are Bordeaux like with cedar upfront and stewed vegetables on the finish. Dry and crisp with a slight souring on the finish. Alcohol is well hidden. Overall: a light brew with an overpowering cedar aroma and flavor. Not my cup of tea. ChillCoat (1029), Concord, California, USA Apr 18, 2006 Bottled. Pig Nun. POurs a clear, yellow color with the slightest red hue. Frothy white head. Brett aroma (Brettanomyces lambicus, I’d guess, ’cause I’m getting a bit of a cherry pie note) also cinnamon and bubble gum. Spicy flavor with a watered down but harsh astringency. Very peppery. Oh so disappointing after the aroma builds you up. ------------------------------------------------------------
I’m rerating this even before I finished the bottle. I took my glass out to the back yard to finish it and this beer seemed to open up quite a bit. I distinct Belgian Ale flavor appeared that I hadn’t noticed before. Kind of spicy still but the maltiness seems to have come out of it. The brett character is quite nice with it. Papsoe (14642), Frederiksberg, Denmark Apr 16, 2006 (Bottle 75 cl) Pours a hazy golden with a creamy, white head leaving a neat lacework. Some traces of Brett in the aroma. Only a medium body, very dry with a vague underlying tang. Brewed for the American market where there seems to be a constant demand for Brett - also in other styles than Gueuze/Lambic. For a Belgian this is not the real McCoy, but still it’s quite fresh.
Thanks to Degarth for sharing. 090406 bb (2905), Martinez, California, USA Apr 14, 2006 Updated: Apr 15, 2006Bottle. Pinhead. Amber beer with a whitish head. Floral, perfumy aroma with a nice tartness. Floral, stale hop flavor with a nice mild malty graininess. Very perfumy. Reminds me a bit of Orval. Dry finish.
