1FastSTi (2551), Glendale, Wisconsin, USA Nov 1, 2005 Updated: Oct 6, 2006Pig Nun. Pours to a hazy straw body with a thin wispy white head. The head is regenerative with a swirl. The aroma is sour, tart, with a fruity/grapefruity aroma, mandarin orange flesh and English hops. The flavor is almost Biere de Garde like. Tangy grains, yeasts, English hops. The palate is minerally and dry. Medium-light body. JCapriotti (1378), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Nov 1, 2005 Pig Nun. Cloudy gold color. Lasting off-white creamy head.
Sour barnyard straw aroma. Some grassy lemon. Some carmelly leather sweetness.
Yeasty barnyard sweet caramel. Herbal sweet and sour blending.
Really pretty good. Nice flavor, I think the yeast is yummy and is part of the barnyard type character I am picking up.
DavidP (1743), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Nov 1, 2005 Pig nun bottle. Hazy orange-amber body with a regnerative white head. Decomposing grapefruit rind aroma with an efferevescent grassiness. The aroma leads you to belive that the flavor have a lambic-y tartness but it’s well-grounded in darker pale malt. On top of that is a bier de garde-ish mineral thing with tangly citrus rind. An oddly-categorized beer but sitll tasty. MIBRomeo (1962), Wisconsin, USA Nov 1, 2005 sampling the pig nun thanks to dave.
Dark yellowish brown visible carbonation small white head nice thick lacing. Smells of sweet honey and hints of sour notes some other odd funk in it as well as hints of grapefruit. Tangy highly carbonated palate.. ok coating. Very warm swallow noticable alcohol contents some odd spices light honey hints of hop. A decent beer. biz82 (1328), austin, Texas, USA Oct 29, 2005 Bottle of Surly Bird. Very carbonated hazy pale yellow with a thick strong head. Sour, funky caramel granny smith apple aroma. Funky, tart and bitter flavor. Citrus rind and some woody notes. The alcohol is noticable in the sinus after you swallow. Moderately sweet, clean, bitter finish. Quite complex though the elements seem to fight each other somewhat IMO. Pailhead (2572), Allen Park, Michigan, USA Oct 23, 2005 Bottle: Surly Bird release. Creamy fruit, yeast, and light tartness in the aroma. Pours a hazy yellow with a moderate white head with great lacing. Lightly fruity with some moderate yeast flavors. Light hints of sourness in the middle. Moderate flowery hops in the finish. Dickinsonbeer (3434), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA Oct 17, 2005 First rating was 3.8 of pig nun, then this rating is of surly bird- spoon whacker to follow...Pours a dark hazy orange/deep gold with a pretty good sized head. Aroma is very complex- musty, barnyard, spicy and phenolic. Has that classic awesoem belgian funk to it. Tastes slightly malty, moderate to light on the sour notes and a good amount of funkiness and hints of fruit. Finishes a little dry and pretty smooth overall.
Seems as though spoon whacker is more mild overall. Definitley not as funky or yeasty as the pig nun or surly bird. Flavor is definitely more skewed toward a sweet malt and less bitter/hoppy. Slight astringency in the aftertaste. Id probably rate this one around a 3.5 total score. BeerLimey (1873), California, USA Oct 9, 2005 Clouded orange appearance, good head formation. Funky wild yeast aroma. Sweet apple cider, yeasty flavor. Nice brew but lacks the complexity to truly be a real wild child. Earlier Rating: 12/17/2003 Total Score: 4.2 Very pale amber appearance, excellent head formation. Swett wild flower aroma with hints of raspberry followed by a mustiness. An acidic puckering sourness runs right through the palate becoming especially strong in the finish. Sweet petals and fruit candy provide some balance. Especially puckering in the aftertaste.
