| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Apr 15, 2004 750 mL [Fairly fresh]: large, fluffy icing-like head; persistent, stoic. A deep golden, fizzy mineral pool far from preying eyes: among magnificent redwoods, etched in a towering mountain. A musty breeze carries the distinguished aroma to my anticipating nostrils . . . wow; iron, limestone, flower petals, and fresh herbs. As I dive into the slightly hazy waters the full experience engulfs me: bretty bitterness coats the mouth, while pale malts offer a slight sweetness and a moist barnyard qualities entice the spirit. Another wonderful mix of styles: Gueuze-like tartness, Saison funk, and a Tripel-esk bitterness and spice. A wonderful treat. tytoanderso (1387), St. Louis Park, Minnesota, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 23, 2007 Bottle labeled "Reinaert." Wild yeast with some earth tones on the nose. Corn... grilled corn on the cob. Very sweet nose with a hint of sourness. Pours Gold with a creamy white head. Champagne like effervescense. Decent lacing. Quite dry on the palate despite the sweet nose. Yeast both sour and dry. Just a hint of honey sweetness. Decent carbonation with a fairly rich mouthfeel. DragonStout (1386), Pataskala, Ohio, USA

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Jan 9, 2006 Pig Nun version rated here but Surly Bird was sampled earlier. First off I should say that this reminds me more of a Flemish Sour than just a typical Strong Ale. Pours a light orange color with a thick and lasting white head. Delightful aroma reminds me of sour peaches, apples, and cherries. Some bready notes as well. Taste is wonderfully tart without being too mouth puckering or sour. Tons of slightly sour fruits and a crisp dry finish. I’m surprised by the alcohol content, I would have guessed that this beer was around 6.5% ABV based on the taste. Fantastic job of masking the alcohol content. I could make this a regular beer. AgentSteve (1379), SF Bay Area, California, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 9, 2009 Pours a hazy medium golden with a finger thick off white head that sticks around and leaves chunks of lacing. The nose is Bretty and funk with a bit of sour citrus. The flavor is a bit more mild and sweet with a lingering finish. JCapriotti (1378), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 1, 2005 Pig Nun. Cloudy gold color. Lasting off-white creamy head.
Sour barnyard straw aroma. Some grassy lemon. Some carmelly leather sweetness.
Yeasty barnyard sweet caramel. Herbal sweet and sour blending.
Really pretty good. Nice flavor, I think the yeast is yummy and is part of the barnyard type character I am picking up.

| 1.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 1/10 | 3/5 | 2/10 | 1/5 | 4/20 | Jun 29, 2008 This is a bottle of the SURLY BIRD. Aroma is bad, its like a sour diaper with some very faint fruit tones. Color is a pale hazy gold with good carbonation and a loose white head. Taste is as bad as the aroma. It starts with a medium body that goes down sharp. Finish is beyond bad its a sour plastic taste and a strong flavor that can only be described as dirty baby diaper. Oh my god this sucks, I have no idea why this beer has gotten this high of a rating.
