COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brian O’Reilly of Sly Fox Brewing Company joins Dirk Naudts to create the fifth brew in the De Proef Brewmaster’s Collaboration series. This year’s collaboration celebrates the great brewing cultures of both Philadelphia and Gent.

Broederlijke Liefde (Brotherly Love) is a slightly higher gravity interpretation of the saison style. It is fermented with two yeasts – a classic saison yeast as well as brettanomyces from an original gravity of 1066 (16.5 plato). These yeasts yield a dry and slightly spicy ale with a strong hint of farmhouse character that will continue to develop with age. The use of Target and Styrian Golding hops at 37 IBUs add floral aromatics and a balancing bitterness.

Broederlijke Liefde if the official Belgian collaboration ale of Philly Beer Week 2011. If you can’t join us in Philadelphia for our annual celebration in June please enjoy this creation in your own celebration of the international brewing community.

2011? Murky orange with good, foamy, off-white head, light legs / Delicate, acidic nose of orchard fruit, tropical fruit, coconut, brett, oak / Medium to full body, acidic but lot of fruit and malt, moderately sweet, with hop balance but not enough to stand up to the big fruit (to my taste), and lightly bitter finish / Flavors, on the simpler side, of pineapple, orange, peach, coconut, straw, horse blanket / A good brew but, for me, too much of a fruit bomb which overwhelms the hops and brett.

Bottle from Brown Jug Warehouse in ANC. Colour...golden straw with a thin white head. Nose...funky munky! Citrus and yeasty zest accompany. Palate...delicate bubbles bring forth an escapade of funky dryness that exudes oak, lemon curd, orange marmalade and quince juice. Some dry earth and leaf litter hits the sides if the palate and then comes the bretty goodness which resounds across the finish.

Hazy golden orange pour with a white head. Nose is sweet tropical fruit, melon, and a subtle citric tartness. Some sweet sugar and malt notes with a light floral hoppiness. The flavor is mildly tart which works well with the sweetness and fruit character. Lots of tropical fruit and melon notes, citrus, and peach. Very nice.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass; no bottle dating, but probably brewed in 2011. Pours slightly cloudy golden amber color with a nice 2-3 finger fluffy white head with nice retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of huge lemon zest, pineapple, orange peel, peach, grass, hay, pepper, herbal, earth, and yeast spiciness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity; very fruity and tropical from the Brett. Taste of lemon zest, pineapple, orange peel, pepper, peach, citrus rind, hay, floral, grass, wheat, earth, and yeast spiciness. Slight earthy tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, pineapple, citrus rind, pepper, peach, grass, hay, floral, earth, and yeast spices on the finish for a good bit. Very nice flavor complexity and balance; with a nice malt and spicy ester balance; with zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a lightly slick and prickly mouthfeel that is very nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an excellent Brett Saison. Very nice flavor balance and complexity; and extremely smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering as expected.

750ml bottle. Clear golden orange with a thick, foamy, off white head. Aroma of musty basement, orange peel, bread dough and a light herbal tea. Dry malt flavor with zesty yeast, light tartness and no alcohol taste. Medium to light body with active carbonation. Really great saison, would buy more if it wasn’t so expensive.

January 6, 2012 - with blankboy, garthicus, gregclow, jerc & mabel. 750ml corked & caged bottle c/o swoopjones - thanks, Mike! Pours clear bright gold with an amber tinge and a smallish frothy off-white head. Tangy aroma - sweet and fruity, spicy and yeasty, a wee bit of sourness to it, some alcohol presence, not ’hot’ at all. Taste - ooh - nice balance, a simple spicy/cardamom Belgian ale with plenty of pungent floral bitterness ... apple, tons of yeast, some off-dry white win character - quite light and delicate and did not seem remotely close to 8% Body is light, a bit slick, tingly carbonation, finishes quick and dry, just a wisp of acidity in the linger; tasty and refreshing.
