3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Thanks to nate321 for this one! Pours a dark golden with a medium white head that leaves good lacing. Aroma is fun with its good oak character and fruits but a bit out of style with all that sugar it puts out. Taste is fruity, caramelly and only lightly acetic. Mouthfeel is not too heavy (pretty light actually), keeping it really drinkable. A good one but not as complex as I was expecting.

750 ml bottle from Binnys (Naperville). Finally hitting some sours that I’ve been holding on for too long in the beer fridge. Pours a mellow hazed orange copper hue, brighter glow as we move out from the middle. Edges and bottom show distinct sunset orange glow. Frothy whitish head stays as a firmer layer, decent stick around and good lacing. Nice lasting foamy layer. Aromas show a decent funkiness off the bat, hitting some orange rind, bretty dust and funk, gentle wet basement and horseblanket. Firmer oak as it settles in, some leather and subtle sweetness. Pretty nice, complex. Initial is medium bodied, perhaps a touch lighter as we hit with distinct orange and citrus like, touches of sourness grow, decent lactic twangs meet sour cherry, gentle tannic feel as the oak is more mellow for me, firmer brett and fruit presence still ticks on and keeps this beer on point. Raspberries and blackberry subtle jabs at this time make it a bit jammy, fruity, with that distinct orange peel and fruit preserves element keeping going. Backend is a bit more dry and tannic, the brett giving some more life. A bit more carbonation back here makes it a bit more light, dry, effervescent. Finish is fruity and a bit tart, some linger lactic elements cut through that malt body, wild yeast provides funk, complexity, and some dryness as we finish. Pretty nice.

Tap at Quenchers. Unfiltered orange-red. Fluffy, patchy off-white head. Awesome aroma, sour raspberry, cherry, vinegar. Delicate and lactic, kind of watery, not much of a body, but bold enough to balance that out. Vinous, red wine notes. Intense and pretty authentic, maybe a touch of dry aspirintest tube action though. Some passionfruit tones. Enjoyable and complex, but just doesn’t hit World Class. I’d drink this every day of the year, but it still just isn’t the best example of the style. Dry and cherry sour. OK, but just doesn’t deserve high numbers.

Pours a bright orange with a nice head and nice lacing on the glass.
The aroma is funky with some light paint, some animal sweat, some leather, and some marmalade.
The beer is nicely sour, tart & fruity with some nice woody/earthy notes. The only thing really bringing it back & reminding me that it’s anything like Fred is this constant orangey flavor almost marmalade like, but way more focused on the orange rind in this beer.
Not really a let-down, as it was a really nice beer, but I had such higher expectations for this one.

Mørkegylden i glasset og noe tåkete. Freskt skum. Frukt og syre i aroma. Smaken er balansert, med innslag av epler, sitron og kirsebær. Avslutningsvis noe kjeks. Medium+ syrlig, og en god blend. En frisk avslutning på kvelden.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, best before 4/10/2014. Pours fairly hazy reddish orange color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of green apple, cherry, cranberry, pear, grape, herbal, clove, pepper, oak, candi sugar, light vinegar, funk, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast esters with funk and moderate malts; and good strength. Taste of big tart cherry, cranberry, green apple, pear, grape, herbal, clove, caramel, candi sugar, oak, funk, vinegar, toast, and yeast earthiness. Fair amount of earthy/fruity tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark and light fruits, herbal, clove, pepper, candi sugar, oak, funk, vinegar, toast, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity and balance of malt and fruity/spicy yeast flavors with moderate funk; and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, slick, and moderately acidic mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent blended Flanders Red style! All around awesome balance and complexity of tart fruity/spicy esters with malt; and very smooth to sip on. A highly enjoyable offering.
