Draft. Pours a translucent orange with a small head. Aroma is tangerines, citrus, but I’m not getting any funk. Flavor is sweet with a bit of hop citrus but not funky and actually a bit on the watery side. Not bad but not what I was expecting.

Tap at Paradiso Dupont. The pour is a full opaqueish, glowing orange that is later fairly translucent. Beautiful. Sticky but minuscule white lace clings to the snifter. Aroma is fruity tangerine, fresh citrus, but no Brett character is noticeable. No serious Brett carbonation or even gargantuan Brett head. (probably kegs were pasteurized or not Brett infected. If this was 100% Brett fermentation like the description says, then there is a major problem here). Taste is bitter citrus rind, dough and sweet rolls. Palate is lightly chalky with noticeable cardboard. No Brett. No wildness. Overall pretty mild and bland. Heavy bitterness. Not sure why I expected more from an Allagash/De Proef tag team.

Bottle:   Dark straw, very cloudy, moderate to large frothy white head, clingy lacing.   Funky nose, big time basement, sweet straw/hay, and pixie stix like powdery sugar.   Tart and sweet on the tongue, vibrant straw/hay, somewhat wheaty.   Not sour at all, but it may be a little tart.   Moderate to full body and mouthfeel.   Sweet powdery sugar like finish.   Good, quite sweet, minor tartness, but rather ho-hum.   This seems like a Belgian Golden, pale, with quite a bit of sweetness.   Nothing fancy, decent, but a beer thats easily forgetable.

Sampled on tap on 2/14/2011 at the Beer Revolution De Proef event. Reportedly the 2nd and final batch made. This Belgian Strong Ale pours a slightly hazy medium orange gold color from the tap. Medium to large sized white foamy head with nice lacing and decent retention. The aroma is fruity and sweet, pineapple (tropical), must, touch of barnyard and yeasty. A medium bodied Belgian Strong Ale. The malts are fruity and sweet, pineapple, peaches and apricots. The hops are herbal and earthy. Nice lively carbonation. Kind of yeasty and bretty, but the brett is neither that funky/barnyardy or really dry. Very nice soft carbonation. There is a nice balance between the fruit, brett and yeast. For a sweeter beer this is one you could drink a whole lot of. Mouthfeel is full and round, nearly chewy. The finish is clean and dry. The dryness tends to linger. The aftertaste is slightly sweet and a touch funky.

Bottle shared by TPatuto - Pours honey yellow with small off-white head. Aroma is passion fruit, apricot, honey, barnyard, and sweet bread malt. Tastes yeasty, bready, and malty. Sweet honey and light brett funk on the finish. Feels effervescent and lightly syrupy in the mouth. Yum.

2008 bottle: Yeast, fig, date, and toffee aroma. Opaque orange, thin head. Sweet cashew and toffee flavor. Chewy texture. Malty currant on the back end. Alcohol not noticeable. Mellow and smooth, a good beer.

Bottle. Pours a golden yellow with a one finger off-white head that left good lacing. Aroma of barnyard funk, brett, fruit and had notes of leather. Flavor was lightly acidic and grainy with sweet malts, funk, brett, yeast and some light fruit.

otakuden (1558) - Vero Beach, USA - NOV 15, 2010
Appearance: thick heavy orange under a thin head which leaves much to be desired. Bubbly collar hangs loose while some swirls do leave random blotches of lace.
Nose: ripe and musty at the same time. Pineapple, pears, leather, must. Funkalicious with more horse and saddlebags, freshly oiled please. Aloe freshly cut from the plant.
Palate: major undercurrent of funk thanks to those lovely Brettanomyces; leather, horse, saddle bags. Pineapples in the rough with whole aloe leaves for a side dish of tropical delights. Big on flavor though not too heavy in weight. Pear joins the pineapple with sweetness lingering up front while funk dominates the middle and finish. Papaya and guava join the tropical fray. Aloe is pervasive, especially in the finish.
Final Thoughts: I can sum this beer up very simply: the wild west meets the tropics and voila! The Les Deux Brasseurs is born. Funked and tropical and ohso tasty. Wasn’t sure how much I would dig it with the first few sips, but she grew on my quickly and thankfully so.

savnac (1481) - Anchorage, Alaska, USA - OCT 20, 2010
750ml bottle. Hazy amber orange. Aroma of spicy yeast, light brett and rich malt. The flavor is a lot less sour than the aroma would indicate, lots of maltiness with some light hop bitterness and tartness in the finish. Medium body with average carbonation and a dry mouth feel. Pretty good beer, drinks very easy and hides the abv well.
