Thanks to blutt59 for sharing this bottle. The beer pours an orange-amber color with a white head. The aroma is vanilla, caramel malt and some very light tartness. The flavor is caramel malt and alcohol with some light tartness. Medium to thick mouthfeel and low to medium carbonation. For a beer that says Imperial Flanders Red Ale on the label, I really expected more tartness.

750 ml bottle poured a hazy reddish amber with a lasting amber head. Aromas of barnyard, carmel, grapefruit, oak, vanilla, pine and light leather. Barnyard fades as the beer warms. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of oak, vanilla, carmel, barnyard, pine, grapefruit, light earthiness and light leather with a smooth dry lingering oak finish.

Bottle… Cloudy burnt orange/rusty ale with a small, fizzy, off-white head. Good retention. Malty, oaken nose – big time raw white oak. Full-bodied and lightly creamy with jazzy carbonation. Big caramel and toffee malts; big, juicy American hops. Finishes bittersweet and tongue numbing. Not remotely a Flanders red as the label proclaims, but not remotely bad either. Quite good for what it is… a double/imperial red ale.

Pour is reddish opaque amber with a fluffy slow fading light brown head...smell is strongly hoppy with lots of grapefruit some pine resin...then there is a slight subtle funk and sourness underneath...it is quite subtle...I’m not sure what to make of it...taste is strange as well... definitely an American Strong Ale...grapefruit and tons of resinous flavors...then the faint sour funk of cherry skin comes in...again it is just understated and I wish it was 25% stronger...that would knock this beer out of the park...finish is lingerly bitter...

750 ml. bottle from Green’s on Ponce. An American Strong Ale, what the fuck? I’m completely shocked by the style. At least I’m not rating it under the category of "Sour". Light brown/dark orange translucent appearance. Nice fluffy head that is slowly fading away. This beer has got my votes in the "looks" department. Lots of fruit popping through and hitting my nostrils. There is a shitload of pineapple hitting my nose. This smells like Hawaiian Punch. The rye shows up a little bit, but not enough to really even mention. I’m not smelling the wood or the brett, which is a major let down. It is pungent which is why it gets the points. Wood, and hints of the Big Hoppy Monster are there. It tastes much better than it smells. A little hot because of the alcohol. The oak is coming through in the form a citrus zing. Light pineapple is showing up and providing a somewhat fruity flavor. Nice lingering bitterness. All we’re really lacking here is the brett. Maybe it’s a bit too "green". This is good, but I’m sure it will develop well over time.

UPDATED: SEP 21, 2010 Poured a creamy reddish brown with a big head that settles down to a ring along the glass. A floral resin with barnyard vegetation on the nose. There’s plenty of complex notes in there. A distinctive flavor that is somewhat sour at first. A full body, lively carbonated beer that is one of the first beers I would characterize as sticky. A strong flavored, big beer to enjoy

Bottle - 750mL corked and caged from the Rare Beer Club. Murky ruby brown pour with a tall beige head. Odd aroma. Sour fruit, herbal hops, spicy notes, and sweet malt. Taste is big spicy and herbal hops, chewy malt, light tart fruit, and sweet malt. I agree with the first reviewer, this is not a sour beer at all and should be changed. Body is medium with a strong, bubbly carbonation. Ends with more strong spicy and herbal hops, light earthiness, ripe fruit, chewy malt and citrus.

Consumed at a special release party held at Barley’s in Greenville, SC. Served from tap into a tulip. Pours a deep brown with a slight red hue with a one finger off-white head that lingers. Maintains excellent lacing throughout. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt and subtle hop. The flavor was of nice malt with a hoppy followthrough that goes down smooth. It was heavy on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a very nice brew with bold flavors and an excellent aroma. When this comes out... You need to try it. I also agree on the mislabelling of this one as it is more similar to a red ale than a sour...

One of the greatest mis-labels in the history of beer. This isn’t sour. Its not even tart. It pours amber, and it tastes like a hopped up imperial red ale. What the hell? How can this even be considered a sour? Its not. End of story.
