COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A strong blonde ale of about 8.5% alc. by volume that claims vaguely to be an “abbey” beer, Guldenberg bears no resemblance whatsoever to any Tripel you may have sampled, except in color perhaps. It is very hoppy and malty (though not quite as assertive as De Ranke’s XX Bitter). Made in small batches only on the weekends, they are quickly gaining a reputation as the best specialty beers of Belgium.

Bière blonde à la robe faiblement trouble et aux bulles fines. Un petit centimètre de mousse blanche. Belle et amertume qui tient longtemps en bouche, goût épicé mais un peu faible. La teneur élevée en alcool ne se fait pas sentir !

(filling in some older backlog classics, 2012-13) 33cl and beautifully, near-Bavarian wrapped 75cl bottles, Geers. Clear, luminous golden pour with characteristic mountainous, layered foam rocks. Intensely Belgian-hopped, with sharper grasses, pollen, apple peel building on fragrant pastures of aromatic pale malts. Tastewise, there is a lot working against the traditional tripel profile: fruity esters, but non-sugary, almost clean ones: rather green berry, candied lime peel and pear liqueur than the traditional apple, strawberry and pear syrup. Abv fumes are there, but kept in check or at least masked by quite intense hop bitterness. - Headstrong brew, a tad too heavy for my own tastes and very challenging to cook with (pork roast near accident...) on account of the pronounced BE bitterness.

Tripel (in spite of what they claim, this is still a tripel to me) with golden blonde, misty colour and thick, off-white head. Spicy and malty, some citrus, sweetish in onset but drying towards the end, resinous, long dry hoppy finish, a tad liqueurish. Very good, as most of De Ranke’s products.

Smell of belgian yeast, plums, dates and caramel. Very drawn out caramel honey taste with a bit of dates. Very elegant and nice amount of dark fruits, with a raisin finish.

Bottle. Pours cloudy pale straw with airy off-white head. Clear aroma of yeast, hops, fruit and flowers. Bitter, hoppy flavour, with dusty notes and touches of malt and fruit. Lingering, dusty and bittersweet aftertaste. A very nice one.
