COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Kriek de Rank is real Belgian sour ale fermented with cherries and then blended with real lambic. It is unfiltered and unpasterized. The de Rank brewery was founded by two good friends; Nino Bacelle & Guido Devose. To them, brewing is a weekend hobby, not an occupation. For a few hours every week they make small batches of what many consider the best specialty beers. Their beers are robust and flavorful. They use the best Hallertau and brewer’s Gold varieties of hops.

750 bottle purchased at Lukas in Kansas City, Missouri. Pour is reddish pink with a one inch white pink head that falls noisily with no lace. Aroma of mild skunk, earthy tart cherry, and barnyard Brett funk. Behind that is some vinegar sour that rounds out the nose. Taste is acetic lemon, sour cherry, vinegar, farmyard Brett dry funkiness and some wood resin nature that picks up in the finish. Taste is much more cherry and expressive versus the nose - really complex with a nice "pop" of bright flavor. Palate is brightly acidic, medium to light bodied with a fine active carbonation. The cherry sour lingers beautifully. Really nicely constructed beer.

Bottle with best by date of 09 2012, bottled in September 2007. Murky purple color with a thin white head that rapidly disappears to leave scant lacing. Aroma of sour citrus and cherries. Taste begins with fruit and grows progressively more sour, with notes of grapefruit toward the finish. Great body. Very dry. Brett character is apparent, and complexity is decent. Nice one.

Bottle. Low but lasting white fluffy white head. Hazy red body. Acidic cherry aroma. Sour rather than just acidic vinegar cherries flavor with low carbonation and a long aftertaste.

Bottle. Hazy golden brown pour with some light white head. Sour but not the sourest kriek I’ve had. Quite tart cherries, and slight woody notes.

Traffic light red colour, showing a tiny bit of development at the edges. Sparse head. Crazily good cherry aroma - halfway between the super-dense earthiness of a really fresh Cantillon and the slightly cough syrup taste of Girardin (who I presume to be the source of the kriekenlambik). Kind of like the cider apple equivalent of cherries, really deep. Subtle farmy earthiness, vaguely reminiscent of pinot at points. It doesn’t taste quite as rich or intense but there’s plenty of cherry flavour and the acid is basically perfect. Enough to know it’s there but nowhere near being painful. Finishing a whole 750mL bottle was no issue. Fairly lean, quite dry with a touch of earthy hop in the finish which works well. Perfect mix of smashability and ponderability (2/2 on made up words to finish ratings today!!).

Bottle with a best by date of 09/2012 which apparently means it was bottled in September, 2007. I was a little wary because despite how much I enjoyed the flavor of cuvee de ranke, it really upset my stomach and I only had half a bottle. This is much easier to drink. Nice red color with a pink foamy head that dies fast. It smells real nice like cherries, barnyard brett, funk, manure, good. The flavor is smooth cherries and not really sour at all, very easy to drink. On to the next one. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 01-29-2010 04:22:54

Opaque strawberry red pour with a thin white head. Sour vinegar aroma with lots of woody grassy funk. Dry sour flavor . Tart cherries. Very sour and good.
