COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Kriek de Rank is real Belgian sour ale fermented with cherries and then blended with real lambic. It is unfiltered and unpasterized. The de Rank brewery was founded by two good friends; Nino Bacelle & Guido Devose. To them, brewing is a weekend hobby, not an occupation. For a few hours every week they make small batches of what many consider the best specialty beers. Their beers are robust and flavorful. They use the best Hallertau and brewer’s Gold varieties of hops.

Bottle. Pours clear ruby with an average, fizzy, pink head, mostly diminishing with spare lacing. Aroma is average malt (hay, straw), light hops (flowers), heavy yeast (horse blanket, barnyard, earth) with notes of cherry, medicine, and bandage. Light bodied, sticky texture, lively carbonation, and a sour finish. Long duration, light sweetness, heavy acidity and sourness.

¼ of the bottle gushed out upon opening, then the head in the glass vanished instantly! Perfect sour / fruity balance. Great palate. Lemony tartness with must and cherries galore. A very elegant tartness, fabulous with Belgian truffles. Great stuff.

750ml bottle at Novare Res. Pours a bright pink red cloudy color with a pink-white head. The nose is musty rotten cherrys. The flavor is is nice and sour at first with a tang of cherrys and a hint of funky yeast. The finish is extremely bitter and acidic. Tastes a lot like a cherry lambic.

0.75 l bottle, vintage 2005, thanks Hannu N! The natural cork did not come out and we pushed the cork inside, the beer foamed to ceiling. Congraturations Hannu, now you have a good lambic microflora in your kitchen! Hazy red color. Rich sour and cherryish aroma with strawberry, lemon and grapefruit. Sour and berryish aroma with cherry, stawberry, lemon, grapefruit.and wood Sharp acidic bite in the finish. Good hardcore acidiy and fruitiness.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy, red-amber body with a small, white head. Smell: Sour cherry nose, pits and stems are most certainly included, along with musty notes of potting soil and the antique leather of grandpa’s boots. Taste: Slight woody maltiness with only a modest amount of sweetness before you’re welcomed by a tart sour cherry fruitiness. While it does exhibit a bright, puckering acidity, it’s not nearly as jarring as some lambics. Touches of earthiness and leather. Finishes expectantly tart and dry. Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Medium-high, fine carbonation. Drinkability: A fine, subtle kriek beer that’s a suitable choice to slake your deep lambic thirst.

750ml bottle from west lakeview.... pours a semi-murky dark cherry red with a pretty thin film of quickly dissipating white head... a vibrant soue vinegary nose with an adequate amount of funk and horseblanket.... fairly tart and sour cherry flavor that also displays a fair amount of sweetness in the middle end. medium carbonation and somewhat thin mouthfeel.

UPDATED: DEC 14, 2008 750ml bottle, best by Sep 2012. A careful pour yields a clear candy bright red colored body with little to no head. Mild to moderate acetic notes early in the nose, with a starchy and dusty cherry/raspberry note following. Body is medium to thin, surprisingly thin, actually, lacking any definite roundness and fullness that I would expect of the style and of de Ranke. Mild sweetness up front is quickly overcome with a moderately strong lactic sourness, leaving the mouth feeling pricked, starchy, dry and slightly fuzzed. Later pours with some yeast mixed in provide additional fullness but still not enough to satisfy me, and the fruit seemed just a little too sugared and sweet.
