Kriek de Rank is real Belgian sour ale fermented with cherries and then blended with real lambic. It is unfiltered and unpasterized. The de Rank brewery was founded by two good friends; Nino Bacelle & Guido Devose. To them, brewing is a weekend hobby, not an occupation. For a few hours every week they make small batches of what many consider the best specialty beers. Their beers are robust and flavorful. They use the best Hallertau and brewer’s Gold varieties of hops.

If Christmas isn’t a good time to have this beer, I don’t know when is - turbid pinkish pour - nose is a pleasant mixture of sweet and sour character - cherry pie filling and red grape sweetness are balanced by dusty/earthy notes, moderate acetic character, and moderately leathery funk - smells pretty awesome, actually - moderate acetic and lacto notes up front in the flavors, followed by bitter cherry skins and pits - a tiny bit of sweetness is covered almost immediately by some vinegar and lightly funky phenols - finish is mildly briny, a little oaky, and moderately earthy/funky - nice balance, with a serious amount of lambic character - I am surprised it is only 30% of the blend - merry Christmas to me.

Bottled. Pours red wine in color with a pinkish head. Sour, some vinegar and cherries in aroma. Flavor is similar, sour and vinegar with some cherry sweetness in aftertaste. Quite nice.

.75 bottle. Dark red, hazy. Very musty cherries, black cherries. Some old oak, and a lot of barn. Overall a more musty, earthy cheeryness. Body light med, soft acidity. Sour dark cherries. A bit different from the krieks ive had. More barny, dark, musty, earthy. Nice nontheless.

Bottle shared by Darrell. Thanks man! January 2006 vintage The beer is a light ruby hue, with a healthy amount of head and lacing. The aroma is the best aspect of the beer, offering a delectable mixture of funk, yeast, and sour cherries. The flavor is quite good, with more of the same. Not quite on the same level as Cantillon or Drie Fonteinen, but a notch below. Lots of cherry presence in both the aroma and flavor, despite the bottle approaching six years old. Mellow and easy to drink. Nice tartness throughout. I definitely recommend it. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 10-19-2011

Bottle 750ml. Pours beautiful red with low pink head. Aroma is of sourness, fruits, cherries, very sligth barnyard. Taste is sour, cherries, sligth funk. Palate: Ligth-bodied. Overall: Pretty drinkable. Not too acidic nor sour. Good balance. I would have like to have a bit more of the lambic funk.

Bottle (750 ml). One of the best looking beer I’ve seen so far. Ruby red with a small long lasting white/pinkish head and nice lacing. Powerful aroma of cherries, red fruits and sourness. Great mix of lambic and belgian sour. Taste is smooth and slightly sweet with cherries, red fruits and slight sourness. Body is thin and not as dry as a lambic would be. Beautiful and extremely well-executed beer. Very complex, especially the aroma, awesome balance and great drinkability. Pleasant surprise, I will drink this again in the future!

Bouteille 750 ml. Wow! Belle robe quasi bourgogne surmontée d’un collet rosâtre. Arôme explosive de cerise, d’acidité fruité et de "barnyard". Le goût est funky, très agréable. Un peu de houblon en final. Très agréable à boire.

Bottle from 06/2011. Shared with my wife after dinner. Both of our observations. (c) if only I noticed, and (a) if only she: Aroma: Cherry, cherry pit, brett funk-(c), lemon citric. Mouthfeel: Medium to light body, carbonation and astringency. (a) a little too "watery". Flavor: Tart, Cherry Pits, a bit more bitter than others I’ve had of the style. strong cherry pit/hop/brett bitter aftertast, light "beer" malty flavor that fades as you drink-(a). Overall. Really enjoyable. Refreshing, reasonably complex, not a terribly "difficult" drink for someone unfamiliar with the style.
