3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
15/10/2010 33cl bottle @ De Ranke presentation at Gentse Biervereniging
Pours a pretty clear dark brown beer with a red glare. Beige head, dissipates quick, non adhesive. Aroma holds caramel, sugars, dark trappist smell (chimay bleu, and ok, I know this is cheap, but hard to describe), banana. MF is a little flat, thin to medium body. Taste is a little sweet, caramel, followed by mocha and roasted malts. Aftertaste is caramel, coffee and some hop bitters, little acidic to balance it off. Would go well with sweet porc meat (honey glazed ribs, bacon and maple syrup) or with chocolate desserts.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
10 oz pour at the Saint-Bock.
Aroma: Lots of dark fruits (plums, grapes, cherries). I also get spices, chocolate and bready malts with some belgian yeast.
Taste: I didn’t detect the hops in the aroma but I could certainly feel them as I sipped. It added some floral bitterness which was nicely matched with the bready malts, cherries, belgian yeast and the alcohol burn. Very flavorful.
Palate: Full mouthfeel with lively carbonation . You can feel the alcohol but it is far from sticky.
Overall: The alcohol made it somewhat hard to drink but still very tasty and complex.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a deep black color with a thin to medium light brown head. The aroma is pleasant, there’s slightly roasted malt, chocolate, fruits and licorice. The flavor is quite good, there’s a dominance of licorice and chocolate, but there’s also some fruityness and slightly roasted malt, also there’s bitterness in the finish. The body is medium with a vinous texture and moderate carbonation. This is very different from what De Ranke usually brews, but it’s also quite good.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
750 ml bottle. A hazy dark amber/brown beer with an average sized, frothy, fizzy, lacing, mostly diminishing light brown head. The aroma is moderately malty, moderately hoppy, lightly yeasty, There are notes of toasted/roasted grains, flowers, dried dark fruits, spices, a hint of chocolate, nuts and alcohol, perhaps a hint of ripe banana and caramel. The flavour is moderately sweet, lightly sour, lightly to moderately bitter. The chocolate notes are more evident in the mouth, Lots of dark fruits, too. Very well balanced. Smooth mouthfeel, medium to full body, average to lively carbonation, very long finish with medium bitterness, lightly alcoholic. For its alcoholic strenght it’s very drinkable, it really goes down well. The dark fruits provide a nice and absolutely not cloying sweetness, balanced by a good amount of noble hops. In any case I focus my attention mainly on the dark malts. Excellent.

Pours a clear amber colour with a frothy white head. Roasted malts, caramel, syrup and fruits dominate the aroma. Flavour of sweet fruits, butter, yeast and licorice. Medium bodied with a dry, slightly bitter finish. Decent Belgian Strong Ale.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Aroma of candi sugar, raisins, chocolate and toffee. Appearance is dark with tan head. Flavor matches the nose, but finishes with a hop bitterness. Palate is effervescent, bubbly and creamy. Wonderful.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Poured dark brown color with a large frothy off-white head that was mostly lasting with excellent lacing. Aroma was as complex tart citrus and yeast. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Flavor was full with sweet, yeast tone and spices with a moderate to heavy bittersweet finish of medium to long duration. Good brew that exceeded my expectations..

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottled 75cl (BB 10/2013 = vintage 2008?)
Ruby red color, small steady creamy beige head, lace. Fruity maltyness, almond and raisins in the nose. Wineous palate. Fruity, caramel, a bit sour, toffee. Light hoppyness in the aftertaste. Probably slightly better when this is fresh, so most likely no need to age this brew.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours very dark brown with a mahogany hue with a good sized light tan head. The aroma has dark smooth malt that isn’t bitter, lots of earthy Belgian yeast, raisins, dates and figs - quite inviting. Medium / full body that has some crispness with lots of carbonation that is somehow smooth, sharp and flowing. The flavor starts with the aroma traits, but with some bitterness to the malt and adds cream, cocoa and light cracker. The finish has some spicy hops and earthiness. Very nice beer.
