(bottle) pours an almost black colour with a frothy off-white head. aroma of toasted malts, hazelnuts, light coffee and herbal hops, a bit unexpressive. flavour has a medium sweetness, with light notes of toasted malts, some obtrusive notes of cooked vegetables and a somewhat salty finish. medium-bodied with average carbonation.

It’s Belgian but with its hobby and roasted taste it leans towards German swartzbier as well. As usual de Ranke plays with the hobs and get a non-typical Belgian beer.

Cloudy, with little aroma; however, it is very lively on the tongue. Notes of ginger, cherry, and a malty finish. Paired well with beef stroganoff and asparagus. Would have again and recommend to a friend.

The color is brilliant! It’s really dark, almost black... I tried this on a beer tasting event and i was in awe! The different kinds of malt they use really defines this beer! The taste is rich and has hints of caramel, coffee, chocolate, caramalized sugars,...
Compliments to "De Ranke" for this one!

Bottle from Systembolaget. It poured a very dark and hazy amber liquid with a brown tint and a big light beige head. Strong smell of yeast, brandy, dark sugar, dried fruits and spices. Similar taste with some booze. Semi-harsh mouthfeel, thick body and medium amount of carbonation. Lots of flavour that feels a bit spiky and pulling in different directions. Got better about half way through.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured out a medium brown brew with a large long lasting thick light brown cap and slippery lacing. Surprising aroma of chocolate, red licorice, sweet caramel, fig newtons and light herbal notes. Very interesting aroma and complexity. Sharp bitterness hits first followed by chocolate and citrus ( not like west coast citrus), bit of herb, toffee, interesting mix. Yeast. Bitter finish. I just ran out of beer.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a dark amber with a thin tan head. Metallic aroma with sweet crystal maltiness and some dustiness. Dry roasty flavor, a little cocoa, bread and toffee. Not really a huge fan of roasted malts in Belgian beers but this isn’t too bad. Minor accents of spices and hops. Slight boozy tinge but overall very dry and drinkable.

11.2oz gusher of a bottle - pours a murky purplish brown with a loose, fizzy head - A bit od sweet dark fruits and caramelized sugars in the nose ay first - some earthy notes of bitter herbs, hops, toasted grains - full carbonation in the mouth - surprisingly dry and bitter at the start and the tail end, with only some moderate sweetness through the middle - fairly strong hop profile that compliments the dusty yeast, soft herbal notes and snappy grains - finishes dry and bitter, with some notes of bakers chocolate - earthy/basement notes throughout - very nice.
