The heaviest ale on our menu with a very rich taste, coming from the six different kinds of malt we use. These malts also give it that rich, dark, nearly black colour. The royal doses of Challenger and Saaz hops bring the typical balance between sweet and bitter.

Bottle. A strong malty smell, bitter chocolate, light sour, a little bit like wine. The beige head is large and foamy with a normal duration. The body is black. A strong taste of chocolate, some coffee. The body is strong, oily and creamy with a soft carbonation. A very good beer!

Bottle shared by Tmoney99. Pours a hazy brown color with a medium sized beige head. The aroma is sweet and malty with some chocolate and brown sugar and a hint of spice. The flavor opens sweet, favoring brown sugar and caramel. Mid palate though it becomes more woody with a mild to moderate tart quality. The finish is a bit strange with the hops trying to come through, but not blending well with the sweetness. Interesting.

Bottle 33cl Murky reddish with a tan creamy head, persistent with good lacing. Aroma to toasted malts, caramel, licorice, alcoholic, brown sugar. Taste is to dark fruits, with brown sugar; oily feel, medium body and average carbonation. Finish is long and dry but sweet and vinous.

33cl. Deep mahogany-chestnut with a billowing cloud of foam on top. Crisp earthy spices, molasses, medium toast, chocolate and a hint of citrus in the nose. Flavor starts the same delicious blend, then surprisingly turns to some smoke and iodine for a great finish. Wasn’t expecting the peat smoke, but it surely does a great job of balancing this otherwise sweet, medium-heavy bodied brew. What a great, unassuming beer.

Muddy brown with a large tan head. Aroma is of spicy yeast, burnt sugar, rye bread, and sour fruit. Flavor has notes of roasted malts, caramel, and candy sugar. Yeasty and dry finish. A little too sweet.

Bottle from S.Brevinga Alus, Riga. Pours a dark brown colour with a fair, light tan head. Aroma of caramel and milk chocolate. Similar flavours with medium carbonation and a light CO2 prickle. A bit too fizzy for me. Some burnt toast linger and alcohol is fairly present given the abv. Just a little sweet, thin and a foamy mouth-feel. Just OK.

Prokroustis (689) - Thessaloniki, GREECE - SEP 12, 2011
Black murky body with an off white head. Aroma starts off with coffee and chocolate, moving to a spicy and herbal note, along with licorice. Full bodied, a little alcoholic. Flavour is very balanced and has caramel, herbal notes along with dark fruits and roasted malts, leading to a dry finish. Another great beer from De Ranke.

11.2oz bottle in a Trappist glass. Pours very dark brown with a really thick, lacy, beige head. Aroma of chocolate and lightly roasted malts, spicy yeast, and some floral hops. Flavor about the same. Smoother texture. A really good dark, Belgian beer.
