The heaviest ale on our menu with a very rich taste, coming from the six different kinds of malt we use. These malts also give it that rich, dark, nearly black colour. The royal doses of Challenger and Saaz hops bring the typical balance between sweet and bitter.

750ml shared by Turdferguson - thanks, Sam! Substantial dark brown pour, with reddish tints and a big fluffy carbonation. Nose initially promises dark fruits and such, but comes on strong with dry dark chocolate. Nice silky mouthfeel, faintly creamy with a pleasantly chalky finish. The intense hop additions give it a distinctive quality, again tending towards baker’s choc in a way that pleases but isn’t overstated.

750 ml bottle. Deep brown color, lasting tan head. The aroma has hops, alcohol and something that reminds me of shoepolish. Big dark malt flavor with a Belgian tang. Hops, raisins, unsweetened chocolate. Full body, high carbonation. Nice complexity. Makes a majestic pairing with rich blue cheese.

Finlemmad i smaken. Frisk, uppiggande. Ett öl som dansar fram, galant, gracilt, gör piruetter på sinnernas tiljor. Succén är given. Njutningslystnaden ger stående ovationer och känslosvallen går höga. Noir de Dottignies vet att föra sig i de finaste av salonger.

Bottle. Very odd mix of dark, almost kind of stoutesque, malt and typical belgian yeast qualities. I didn’t like the messy end result. It was just too much for me, without being that interesting.

Pours almost opaque brown with a very high brownish head. Aroma is malts and spices, flavour is quite rich with malts, spices and some surprising hops in the finish. Great.

Bottle: Small off white foamy head on top of a dark ruby red beer. Smell wood, plastic, malts, spices and hints of brown sugars and nuts.    Taste wood, spicy, light liquorice, bitter, spices and light dry with hints of toasted malts and chocolate. Taste no alcohol.

UPDATED: FEB 15, 2011 Appearance: muddy, slightly purplish brown with a thick, creamy tan head that shrinks to a full collar; thick curtains of lace. Aroma: chocolate malts, citrus, alcohol, menthol and mint, sour yeast and red wine. Taste: dry and slightly bitter chocolate, a little acidic hoppiness, some clove and some surprisingly mellow yeasty spices, Finish: slightly bitter and dry as the hops carry over to the finish; remainder flavors are a little chocolate, a little clove and a little citrus. Notes: Palate is creamy, smooth and mellow. Taste was likewise surprisingly subdued when compared to the aroma. I expected a big blast of flavors, but everything was very laid back and very subtle. Alcohol is very well-hidden. Have a bottle cellared for 2013; will be interesting to see how the flavors mature. Had a second bottle (small version) for my birthday from the wife. Enjoyed it even more this time, bumping my rating to 4+. Really refreshing and balanced. Almost like a doppelbock meets a pale ale.

On tap, but just a 4oz taste as part of a flight. Medium brownish color. Medium body with just the right corbonation. Excellent malty taste With raisin and brown sugar. An excellent brew - very well balanced. Just the right amount of alcohol comes thru, some hints of sweetnes, and even a fruity mild tart finish. Will try this again definitely.

Pours dark brown body with a large light brown head which laces the glass nicley. Sweet bread and raisins in aroma. Light sweet and malty flavor, feels rather light, amazing that it has 9% ABV.
