The heaviest ale on our menu with a very rich taste, coming from the six different kinds of malt we use. These malts also give it that rich, dark, nearly black colour. The royal doses of Challenger and Saaz hops bring the typical balance between sweet and bitter.

Pours a very dark amber colour, nowhere near as dark as a stout. Sweet aroma. Raisin notes alongside caramel. Nice sweet finish. The strong ABV is noticeable but not unpleasant.

Pours hazy dark brown with a frothy off-white head. The aroma contains roasted malts, caramel, licorice, yeast, some spices and coffee. It tastes medium to heavy sweet and medium bitter leading to a dry and spicy finish. Oily texture and soft carbonation. Very good.

Draft 6 North Edinburgh. Looks great, smells wonderful - smoke and caramel. Perhaps fades a bit on the taste - thinner than I hoped for the abv, just a wee bit too sweet. But it’s a really good after dinner sweet stout. Yummy, but one is enough.

Bottle. Hazy dark chestnut brown with a medium sized light brown head with good retention, regeneration and lace. Dark bread, syrup and dry flowers in the nose. Flavour has brown sugar, honey, roasted malt, dark bread, candied fruit, dust. Medium body, filling texture, soft carbonation, warming alcohol. Good balance, perhaps a touch boozy.

As the name suggests, De Ranke Noir is about as close to black as Belgian Ale gets. Six malts and a fair amount of booze make this a robust beer but not an imposing one. Beautiful pour. Near-opaque, no sediment, and a sparkling, fluffy head. Rich malty aromatics. As Belgian Strong Dark Ale goes this is incredibly approachable. Silky soft body. Mild fruity flavors. It’s like a mellow, aged port. Minimal hops flavors and some breadiness. It’s a nuanced after-dinner beer that could compliment about any dessert.

Pours a dark brown with a fluffy head. The aroma is very yeasty. The flavour was dank, yeasty and woody but unfortunately this one just wasn’t for me. Glad I tried it though.

Bottle shared in the train home after Kimchi Festival 2016 (second day). Smell is dusty metallic. Dark brown with bubbly creme head. Sweet roasted choco malts, raisans, toffee, breadiness. Medium sweet, light bitter, hint of sour in the finish. Medium body, slick feel, low carbonation.
