Ingredients: Water; Barley malt; Hops; Candi-sugar; Yeast.
The heaviest ale on our menu with a very rich taste, coming from the six different kinds of malt we use. These malts also give it that rich, dark, nearly black colour. The royal doses of Challenger and Saaz hops bring the typical balance between sweet and bitter.

Bottle from systembolaget. Some roastiness and leather in the aroma, hints of chocolate and liqourice. The aroma is nice but could have been more powerfull. Dark red appearance. Lots of burnt notes in the taste. There are som coffee as well nicely balanced with some sweetness. The sweetness however is a bit to much especially combined with the alcohol taste which is there in small notes. Medium to full body with a bit to sweet finish. There are some nice qualities to this beer but it is bit to sweet.

Bottle from de Bierschuur in Poppel. The beer has a dark brown to black color and a large cream colored head, with a lot of bubbles. Big notes of figs, plums and pumpernickel bread, with suggestions of fermented cherries and wafts of dark chocolate and a minor hint of coffee. Some metallic notes hit upfront, but fade quickly, giving way to dark fruits, dark fruit juice and rum-soaked raisins. This beautiful dark Belgian ale drops nectarous fruitiness, evoking concentrates of plum, raisin and black cherries. The taste is full and with a nice sweetness which changes into a light bitterness from the cacao tones filled with some hops. Also a little alcohol is noticable which evokes into notes of dark-fruit liquor. The finish is fresh and bitter, which is still noticable after a minute.

In bottle (Brussels); this one was OK. Poured a very dark brown, almost black. It was somewhat dry and smoky with cocoa notes. Overall OK, but better options out there

Strong dark ale since 2009, one of De Ranke’s first to be made in their own brewery in Dottignies. Thick, creamy, yellowish beige head and very dark brown colour, almost black, with rusty hue, cloudy. Aroma of walnuts, black pepper, black coffee, wood, dates, raisins, leafy hops. Dry taste, dried fruitiness, nutty and chocolatey maltiness, a bit woody though this isn’t barrel-aged (at least not that I know of), strong roasted, coffee-like bitterness from beginning to end, with a long and dry hop bitterness in the finish too. Demanding but well-crafted ale.

GBBF Day 4. The great Harrisoni/madmitch76 walkabout. Bottle. Opaque dark brown beer, good pale tan head. Palate is airy and semi dry, fine carbonation. Rich malts but bring light cream. Little toffee. Dark fruits, light spice and brown sugar. Light crisp spicy finish. Nice!

33 cl @ home. Noir profond et riche en dépôt, très légère tête de mousse chocolat au lait. Arôme puissant de pruneau. Corps puissant, saveur de café, pudding, bière gourmande. Le houblon vient ensuite équilibrer l’ensemble. C’est bon !

11.2oz bottle from the past - Nose is raisins and Belgian candy. Sip adds tobacco, toast and slight milky roasty malty goodness. Fairly stout for a BSA. May very likely be the last Belgian beer I buy until I travel to Belgian. Whatever.

Een heel lekker bier met een zeer uitgesproken smaak, mij kon het alvast enorm bekoren.

Bottled, 330ml at Den Engel, Leek, Staffs. Black with cream head. Pleasant, rich, dark fruity flavours from the off, some bitterness moving to a dryness. Hints of tar along with a Victoria plum note, some chocolate. Very decent.

330mL bottle Bit of a gusher - eventually pours a deep bronze body with small dense beige head. Good intensity of aroma; plums, prunes, dense doughy bread, molasses/dark candy sugar, earthy spice, peppery phenolics, Porty booze. Body not as full as expected; quite dry, somewhat astringent, moderate carbonation, slightly tannic even. Palate doesn’t deliver as much as the nose promises; plummy dark fruits, sultana, spice, roast beetroot, earthy candy sugar, and savoury leafy bitterness. Warming finish. Slightly disappointed with this one, seemed to promise on the nose but not quite deliver.
