Commercial Description:
A fantastic Christmas beer, but one that defies the universal custom of a stronger, spicier beer for the holiday season. At 7% alcohol by volume, this one is relatively lighter in alcohol than the Guldenberg, and does not pack the hop punch of the XX. It combines some of the best elements of those other two beers – with a fine balance of malt and hops, complex character, a refreshing dryness, and a gorgeous cellar aroma – but is distinguished by its festive copper color. The 1999 Père Noël was a bit of a departure, with a very appealing yeasty tartness that was not readily discernible in earlier years.

Bottle - 330ml. Hazy dark gold body with a decent white foamy head. Good hoppy aroma with fruity and herbal hints. Its sharp hoppy taste hides the alcohol pretty well and carries herbal and spicy notes. Ends with a good bitter/herbal finish. Enjoyable.

Tap at Sunswick. Didn’t blow me away. Some interesting spiciness. Yes, some nice hop/malt balance, and decenlty rich character. I will continue looking, but I did enjoy this stop along the way.

On tap at Blind Tiger in NYC. Pours a light amber color with a fluffy off-white head. Smells and tastes predominantly of caramel, malt, cloves, and fruit cake. Struck me as fairly simple at the time. Meh.

Bottle left out in the snow to chill- just realised this is the only De Ranke beer I’ve not rated...and decided it’s not too late (or early) for a Christmas beer. Burnished gold with a fine white collar, shrinking to a slick. Slightly jammy hop-driven aroma suggesting lime, satsuma, pear, supersonic and grass, with a dusting of spice. Lean and biting with a bitterness maybe only surpassed (in Belgium) by the XX; dusty orange, some peach and flowers, grapefruit, soapy pine and tonic water buffered with some creamy vanilla malt notes, roasted peanuts, white pepper... Unusual, spikily hopped-up Belgian I’d as happily quaff on a sun-baked patio as by the fireside with a blizzard blowing outside.
