shp555 (1678), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Dec 15, 2007 Pours a hazy copper color with a thick white head. Aroma is fruity, toffee, earthy, and slightly spicy. Flavor is earthy caramel, toffee, and a spicy bitter finish. goldtwins (4079), Nesconset, New York, USA Dec 14, 2007 Poured a Lightly hazed deep gold with a small off-white head. Yeasty and fruity aroma with a light spice to it. The flavor has some sweet malt at the start but that is short lived. Dry from the middle to the end. Hop bitter finish Snojerk321 (1917), San Diego, California, USA Dec 12, 2007 Bottle. Beer poured a deep golden amber, head was off white, thin and took off in a flash. Nose was a bit spicy and had hints of orange peel and clove. FatPhil (3449), Espoo, Finland Dec 10, 2007 330ml bottle (Gallows Bird)
Very bitter aroma - slightly yeasty. Taste matches, but when we added the yeast after a few sips without, the yeastiness is too overpowering, and makes it a bit mushroomy, also quite bitter and caustic on the tongue. So IMHO, don’t add the yeast, and you’ll get a crisper classic de Ranke bitter taste.
iep (229), Amsterdam, Netherlands Dec 10, 2007 Pine tree, strong Noble hops, orange peels, very tart and hoppy on the nose. Balanced on the palate, with a nice interplay between hop-bitterness, vanilla and tart yeastiness. YourDarkLord (1800), Urbana, Illinois, USA Dec 10, 2007 Dark amber with a few bubbles for a head. Aroma was sour, some spice, tart fruit, doughy malt. Flavor was sour/tart with some spice notes. A completely mediocre seasonal.
beerbill (1919), Laurel, New York, USA Dec 10, 2007 33 cl bottle. Pours a very cloudy dirty gold with a thin but long-lasting white head. Aroma was stale grass and yeast. Really not all that flavorful with some yeast flavors along with a very dry hoppy finish. The flavor wasn’t unpleasant, just bland. There was nothing distinctive about this beer, and as a Christmas Ale, I’d say it was a disappointment. ElGaucho56 (386), USA Dec 8, 2007 Draft @ Brick Store. Poured a pretty hazy orange rind color with nice compact 1cm thick pure white head. Very fruity yeast on the nose, definite banana and pear qualities, not particularly spicy, mild alcohol astringency. More citrusy fruits on the palate, somewhat mediocre and soapy body, pleasantly restrained sweetness, hops more felt than tasted, mildly medicinal though in the dry finish. A pleasant diversion, but not mind blowing.
