Silphium (2114), Haslett, Michigan, USA Jan 9, 2006 Hazy, murky orange body, medium-thick off-white/beige head. Floral, peppery aroma, with light fruits, breads, and crackers. Light sweetness in the body but mostly spicy and bitter, with pepper, light caramels, and bread. Medium-bodied. The bitter, earthy hops component that becomes especially evident in the finish is unique. ratman197 (3139), Arvada, Colorado, USA Jan 8, 2006 750ml bottle poured a cloudy apricot with a small white head. Aromas of pine, light carmel and fruity. Palate was light and smooth. Flavor was fruity, pine and earthy with a smooth bitter finish. biz82 (1328), austin, Texas, USA Jan 4, 2006 Hazy buff with a solid 3/8" off white head. Very floral aroma with banana and pear. I can’t read the rest of my notes but I remember really liking this one. Savad (58), Delft, Netherlands Jan 3, 2006 Bottled. Mostly lasting off-white head. Excellent lacing. Amber body. Hoppy, herbal aroma with grape, raisin, lychee, a bit of honey and cask-wood. Pleasant and balanced flavors. Starts moderately sweet, finishes moderate to heavy bitter. Delivers lychee, burnt bread and coffee. Quite different from other Belgian Christmas ales. Rather resembles a saison. Bart (1625), Vosselaar, Belgium Jan 3, 2006 Light amber colour, huge diminishing white head. Malty and Yeasty aroma, dry fruits. Smouth taste, Finish is burnt bitter, light alcoholic, little astringent hezron (600), Viroqua, Wisconsin, USA Jan 1, 2006 Estery yeasty aroma that reminds me of green celery and a chewy, caramel malt undertone with a fruity apricot twist and then a bit of chocolate. What a great aroma. Corked and capped, huge pop and then out it foamed. Exciting! Hazy, murky pumpkin-orange color with a tall white head that thins, but stays thick around the edges. Flavor is chocolaty with vinous caramel and an earthy, spicy, malty, brown sugar complexity. Dry palate, nice and creamy. Thanks to brigadier for sharing. Brigadier (1220), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA Jan 1, 2006 Excellent lacing with a strong head. Poured caramel brown. The initial aroma contains raisins, ether and other fruits. Extremely complex - the first impression was of chocolate, then toffee and finally caramel unfolding over the span of a couple minutes. I’ll have to pick this one up again next Christmas. diabel (1366), Aarschot, Belgium Dec 25, 2005 Draught at Kerstbierfestival, Essen, Belgium Orange, hazy body. Excellent lace. Looks like the perfect beer! Nose of hops and yeast. Moderately bitter initial flavour. Lightly bitter finish. This is a beer totally in the style of ’De Ranke’, it has that typical ’De Ranke’-bitterness.
