A fantastic Christmas beer, but one that defies the universal custom of a stronger, spicier beer for the holiday season. At 7% alcohol by volume, this one is relatively lighter in alcohol than the Guldenberg, and does not pack the hop punch of the XX. It combines some of the best elements of those other two beers – with a fine balance of malt and hops, complex character, a refreshing dryness, and a gorgeous cellar aroma – but is distinguished by its festive copper color. The 1999 Père Noël was a bit of a departure, with a very appealing yeasty tartness that was not readily discernible in earlier years.

Really an unique christmas-season dry and savoury beer. Great balance with belgian yeast, Orange fruit and a zesty and bitter finish.

on tap @ Sergio’s / Louisville KY --- Clear dark amber, thin white head cover, curtain of lace. Taste is semi-sweet toffee malt that adds light spices in the palate, turning sweeter on the swallow before bittering a little for balance in a long finish. A complex and compelling brew. Recommended.

Gelungen! 11/12/11/12//12

bottled 8/07, sampled 2/09. unfortunately my first impression even before i poured was a brown sludge around the inner rim of the bottle that looked like a rusted shower drain. poured an amber orange with a thin white head and some sediment on the bottom. aroma was a unique but uninspiring mix of yeasty spice, fruit and hops. mouthfeel was of course highly carbonated and a bit thin and dry. flavor was ok. ultimately i can appreciate the uniqueness of the beer, but didn’t particularly like the end result. low drinkability."

0,33 bottle purchased in Rome and consumed in Kosovo (no worries Matt/Marko, there is one for you). Pours a dark amber/coppery color, oily texture, extremely cloudy with a tick and frothy off-white head. Nose: astringent citrus skin, green pepper grains, spices, malts. Mouth: medium tartness, palate balanced bitterness, malty notes and elegant dry end. Spices in background. Lovely and different Christmas beer.

Has a underlying backbone of astringent citrus peel. Pours cloudy amber with good head and lacing. Sour and light bitter finish. Some floral yeast. Palate full and varied. Tap at eulogy.

33 cl bottle at home. Aroma of caramel and malt, baked bread and cereal. Pours a nice copper colour with a small, white head that diminishes quickly. Great taste of sweet malt, fruit and has a dry bitterness. On the palate, full bodied, long bitter finish with a warming aftertaste that normally comes with much stronger ales. A very good beer, balanced and well-crafted, exactly what one would expect from a brewery like De Ranke.
