COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A fantastic Christmas beer, but one that defies the universal custom of a stronger, spicier beer for the holiday season. At 7% alcohol by volume, this one is relatively lighter in alcohol than the Guldenberg, and does not pack the hop punch of the XX. It combines some of the best elements of those other two beers – with a fine balance of malt and hops, complex character, a refreshing dryness, and a gorgeous cellar aroma – but is distinguished by its festive copper color. The 1999 Père Noël was a bit of a departure, with a very appealing yeasty tartness that was not readily discernible in earlier years.

Green 750 ml. bottle poured to snifters, with my portion being the closest to the noticeable amount of yeasty sediment at the base, so thus showing a cloudy, apricot nectar appearance, with off white head foam that expeditiously diminished to a bubbly ring & film, leaving foamy spots of lacing on the glass. The nose was light yeast, spicy phenols, and a pleasant mélange of esters as pit fruit, apple & pear. The taste was similar notes, medium bodied, modestly sweet, with soft effervescence, subtle silkiness to the mouthfeel, medium earthy & rind-like bitterness, and some finishing tartness. I think I got the best of the deal in order of share.

Bottle @ Home. Hazed orange colored beer with a thin khaki head. Mix of applesauce, pear, caramel, and a touch of spice on the nose. There’s a fair amount of sweetness to the flavor, too. Maybe a touch of cardboard/oxidation. Pretty ester forward, too. Lots of sweet fruits. Maybe a touch of citrus. Eh.

Une belle bière épicée, et fruitée à la robe ambrée et à la bouche à la fois ample et tendue, belle finale amère qui raffraîchit.

appearance: lightly hazy, golden-orange-copper, with a creamy light tan head. aroma: toasted grains, a little bready, with some general belgian spice and floral-to-citrus hops. taste: unsweet caramel, toast, citrus, grassy, and light piney hops, some spice and stone fruit. finish: dry, lingering herbal and floral bitterness, some lasting yeasty spice. notes: Not bad. Very easy-drinking palate. Hoppier than expected. Bottle from the Rare Beer Club.

Amberblond bier met fijn wit schuim. Geur: fruitig, gedroogde abrikoos, kandij. Smaak: zoetig – bitterig, wat ondefinieerbare kruidigheid die komt duwen. Afdronk: wat zoetigheid en die ondefinieerbare kruidigheid die blijft hangen.
