COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A fantastic Christmas beer, but one that defies the universal custom of a stronger, spicier beer for the holiday season. At 7% alcohol by volume, this one is relatively lighter in alcohol than the Guldenberg, and does not pack the hop punch of the XX. It combines some of the best elements of those other two beers – with a fine balance of malt and hops, complex character, a refreshing dryness, and a gorgeous cellar aroma – but is distinguished by its festive copper color. The 1999 Père Noël was a bit of a departure, with a very appealing yeasty tartness that was not readily discernible in earlier years.

12oz bottle. Pours a moderate head, copper color, plenty of sediment, opaque. Medium aroma, dark fruits, traces of alcohol. Taste has dark fruits, bitter-sweet, a little hoppy. Complex and strong, medium-heavy body.

Stark hefiger, angenehm kräuterartiger Antrunk, herb. Danach überwiegt weiterhin das Kräuteraroma, rund hefig, vollmundig. Gelungen! 11/12/11/12//12

bottled 8/07, sampled 2/09. unfortunately my first impression even before i poured was a brown sludge around the inner rim of the bottle that looked like a rusted shower drain. poured an amber orange with a thin white head and some sediment on the bottom. aroma was a unique but uninspiring mix of yeasty spice, fruit and hops. mouthfeel was of course highly carbonated and a bit thin and dry. flavor was ok. ultimately i can appreciate the uniqueness of the beer, but didn’t particularly like the end result. low drinkability."

ippopotamo36 (254) - Rome, ITALY - OCT 15, 2014
0,33 bottle purchased in Rome and consumed in Kosovo (no worries Matt/Marko, there is one for you). Pours a dark amber/coppery color, oily texture, extremely cloudy with a tick and frothy off-white head. Nose: astringent citrus skin, green pepper grains, spices, malts. Mouth: medium tartness, palate balanced bitterness, malty notes and elegant dry end. Spices in background. Lovely and different Christmas beer.

Has a underlying backbone of astringent citrus peel. Pours cloudy amber with good head and lacing. Sour and light bitter finish. Some floral yeast. Palate full and varied. Tap at eulogy.

33 cl bottle at home. Aroma of caramel and malt, baked bread and cereal. Pours a nice copper colour with a small, white head that diminishes quickly. Great taste of sweet malt, fruit and has a dry bitterness. On the palate, full bodied, long bitter finish with a warming aftertaste that normally comes with much stronger ales. A very good beer, balanced and well-crafted, exactly what one would expect from a brewery like De Ranke.

33cl bottle from Speciaalbierwinkel, Leiden. Thick creamy white head. Cloudy amber pour. A bit sweet and yeasty. Still a pretty decent beer.

Alengrin (2087) - BELGIUM - SEP 20, 2014
Ranke’s Christmas beer, with light beige, thin but stable, creamy head and deep peach blond colour with brownish hue. Fruity and estery aroma of apple, mango, apricot, caramel and fresh green hops. Malty and fruity in the mouth, light sweetness, more drying spiciness in the finish with a refreshing, thirst-quenching, resinous, aromatic hop bitterness in the end. Atypical for a Belgian Christmas beer but very good - and I had not expected anything less from this brewery.

Bottle. Hazy pale amber color with a thick foamy off-white head. Earthy aroma of yeast, malt and some spices. Medium sour taste with a slightly bitter finish. Medium body.
