COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This "Vlumschen Bruynen" or "Flemmish brown" (syn: old brown) was first brewed in 1986 on the occasion of the brewery’s centenary. It has a sweetish roasted bouquet and a mild port-like palate which generates a long bitter finish. Retired 2006 for the new Arend range.

Dark amber colou, brief lively head. Red currant aroma. Medium sweet with perfectly soft mouthfeel. Evident malt flavour backed by some grassy hops. Mild and likable. It’s just okay for me.

Blind tasting session. Herbal and plum aroma. Redbrown color, hazy, large off-white head, good lace. Sweet, just a hint of sourness, light bitter to bitter finish, fruity, prune, wine, hint of chocolat, dry. Strange flemish sour ale but a very good ale!

Draught. GBBF2003. Deep ruby red colour, moderate head and condition. Hoppy chocolate aroma, sweet chocolate malt in the mouth with a good hop flavour, and a sweet finish. Much more enjoyable than the Speciale.

75 cl bottle. An orangey copper-coloured beer finally appeared under the huge offwhite head. Aroma immediately reminds you that you are dealing with a Flemish sour ale with its strong berry notes. taste is sweeter and rounder with a good portion chocolate in addition to the berry acidity. The beer ends more bitter. A long chocolatey finish. Lacking the lactic characteristics of a true Flemish sour ale this interpretation is still highly complex, bordering to some traditional porters in style. Cheers to Belgian originality!

75 cl bottle, bottled feb ’03. Cloudy orange brown. Pours wild as a horse that is told he’s not competing in the Olympics. Hops and licorice aroma and flavor. Medium to full bodied. Just a bit yeasty, apple, cinnamon. Just a bit metallic. Good beer from a great brewery.
