UPDATED: SEP 3, 2004 0,75 litre bottle. Aroma has hops and some caramel. Sweetish hopbitter flavor with caramel and toffee. Just a bit thin, but a good lacing. Recommended.
Re-rate:sampled both at the brewery tap and at De Gouden Leeuw St Lievens Houtem. The brewery (free) sample sufferd a bit from diacetyl. The S.L.H.-one had a beautiful hop character and a refreshing citric flavor. Grapefruit aftertaste.
3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20 JoeinEscazú (1181) - San Jose, COSTA RICA - JAN 21, 2009
UPDATED: JAN 30, 2009 Maybe I shouldn’t be surprised by the low scores here. This ain’t no fancy tasting beer. But it is an excellent drinking beer. It’s a light, crisp, dry pale ale with more noticeable bitterness than biscuity malt presence. Begs to be gulped in quantity. Not surpisingly, better fresh on tap.

11.16oz at Toad in the Hole. Hazy amber with medium fizzy head. Spicy, leafy-herbal, and slightly metallic nose. Firm carbonation and crisp bittering cut deeply into the gentle toffee and vanilla base. So gassy it almost fails to refresh, but the fine lingering hopping does me right.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Nuffield (3087) - Roseville, Minnesota, USA - AUG 12, 2003
From everything I've read, this is a very rare beer even within Belgium, from a small family-run brewery that produces 6,000 hl per year. I guess it was fortunate that I sprang for a glass of this when I saw it on cask. The label said, using the Flemish word, that it was "unfiltered". Actually, it may have been a Dutch word for it, and the family name was spelt De Rijk--some internet materials confirm that this beer is available at one Amsterdam pub using the same "De Rijk" spelling--the name and abv match, and it is described as a Belgian family brewery. Weird provenance. Even if the cask was unfiltered, it is still a very clear, with a vibrant golden color. Thin head. Interesting aroma, and lots of it, though not especially complex. I got bubblegum, fresh licorice, some candy out of it. It left me pleased but a little underwhelmed. (gravity pour at GBBF 2003)
