"Little Owl", a blond beer for quiet tasting created in collaboration with the Regionaal Landschap Vlaamse Ardennen (Flemish Ardennes Regional Landscape conservation board) and the Little Owl Project Leader to support the Little Owl project. To emphasise our regional identity and the links to this little creature, it includes carefully selected herbs and spices from the Flemish Ardennes. These give the beer a unique, full bodied aroma and taste and one will soon make you want more.

Ingredients: barley malt, maize, hops, yeast, woodruff, angelica, sloe.

(bottle, 33cl) Hazy, orange-golden golden colour with a tall and slightly off-white foamy head. Yeasty and slightly bready (cara-)malty aroma with a fruity touch of oranges and tangerines, accompanied by mildly spicy touch. Moderately sweet flavour with a tinge of sourness/tarteness, medium bodied with a moderate carbonation. Soft cara-malty base with a present fruit-character and spicy notes; sweet and minimally vinous fruity finish with peppery spices. Easy-going Belgian Ale. 02.I.11

Bottle. Golden, cloudy, small and fully diminishing head. Moderate malty, sweetish and fruity, some caramel and spices, light and alcohol. Body is medium, malty and sweetish flavor, caramel, light fruitiness and spiciness. Finish is average, malty and lightly sweetish, caramel and some spiciness. Malty and sweetish strong ale, light hoppyness, nothing wrong – nothing special.

33 cl bottle poured to my favorite 1/2 pint taster with a hazed, orange/straw color, bountiful, white, small bubbled head that morped into creamy foam and very thick, clingy curtains of lacing. The aroma was light yeast, candy sweetness, mid-fruit juice as apricot, and light, complimentary hints of spice. The flavor abandoned the sweetness, and presented some striking, almost overbearing hop bitterness for the style, some alcohol warmth, and high carbonation, in a medium to light body. The bitterness continued, coupled with some dryness into the finish.

Bottled (from beerplanet.be). Amber colour, mediumsized creamy beige head. Aroma is fruits, wood, some herbs, mild alcohol as well as sweet malts. Flavour is fruity, yeasty, a bit alcoholic and actually quite bitter towards the finish.

Brilliant gold, effervescent and holding up a fine white head. Aroma lime, sesame, farmyard and a slight natural yoghurt sharpness. Bright and lagery/kolsch-like with a fresh acidity, lemony spice and hint of floweriness suggesting (to me) cardamom. The fact it actually contains angelica, woodruff and blackthorn- 3 spices I have never seen declared on a beer bottle- and all of which are discreetly integrated makes me wonder how many other Belgians are aromatised with spices more exotic than we dare imagine. Just feels like a really well made German lager or kolsch, with an added pinch of...mystique. Pure sorcery.

A great looking label and an equally great looking beer. Its golden and slightly hazy appearance is very seductive. When it’s cold it’s a very solid beer and even quite refreshing. As it turns warmer however it becomes evident just how sweet it is and it looses some of its charm. I’de go for other and less sweet Belgian blondes.

Bottle. Golden color. Slightly spicy and floral lemonaroma. Thinnish. Spicy, floral flavor, sweetish with citrus and tropical fruit. I prefer the basis De Ryck beers to this spiced specimen.
