3.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 TheHulk (484) - Lethbridge, - MAR 28, 2011
The smell has soo much chocolate. It smells great. I want to smell it over and over. the malts are great. Not a lot of head or lacing, a bit clearish too. The chocolate is great, and there’s this weird mint thing that sort of subtly happens. You could miss it if the beer were too cold or you weren’t quite paying attention, but it is there. that chocolate flavour lasts though. If anyone from the dead frog brewery is reading this you should flesh out the chocolate, maybe add some cayenne pepper and forget that silly mint shit. Beer isn’t a desert, it’s the whole damn meal!
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Oakes (10184) - Gibsons, British Columbia, CANADA - JAN 11, 2012
Dark brown colour with a medium-thick head. The aroma is malt-accented but has a lot of chocolate. On the palate, a strange combo of thin and creamy, probably from trying to shoehorn a nourishing beer into 5%abv format. The flavours aren’t bad - chocolate, light roast and faint mint - and it finishes roasty. Decent.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20 Beershine (4718) - The Sunshine State, Florida, USA - DEC 26, 2011
Bomber from LDB. Rich dark brown with a red tint, and nice doily delicate tan lacing. The aroma is quite nice, really, fresh chocolate-mint in mutual balance. Almost smells like a dinner mint, childhood memories of Andes surface! but it really doesn’t smell too artificial or candylike at all. The mint is actually a welcome, fresh, and fun change of pace in the aroma because it smells festive and inviting. The body is a little thin, and the chocolate malts don’t quite fill the palate or linger but the flavors are pretty good. The carbonation is lively. That’s nice but a little creaminess in the palate would really lift this up. There is more chocolate malt than mint in the flavors, leaving some nice roast on the palate. The mint just livens and brightens it up. Once you get over the bias against gimmick beer, it’s actually not bad and much better than expected. Worth trying for sure.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 reebtogi (2169) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - NOV 11, 2011
650ml bottle poured brown in color with about 2 fingers of off-white head which left some spotted lacing on the side of glass. Aroma is chocolate and mint. Taste is light malty sweetness with chocolate and mint. This is a pretty good brew with a light to medium body and light carbonation.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 DuffMan (4426) - the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, CANADA - MAY 27, 2011
Bottle. Dark brown, clear, medium almond head. Aroma is unusual, to say the least. Medicinal mint is prominent, with notes of chocolate, caramel. My wife says it tastes just like a Junior Mint in a glass. I agree, with a decent balance between the fresh mintiness and sweet chocolate. Medium dry bitterness in the finish. Mouthfeel is on the thin side of medium-bodied. Unusual flavours that left me wondering if I’d want to have another. I’m still not sure.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 thb (484) - Alberta, CANADA - MAY 13, 2011
Quite deep brown - light does get through around the edges. Huge pillowy head. Aromas: chocolate. Some herby/planty/grassy thing that I think must be the mint. Tastes like after eights. Quite strikingly actually. The "brown ale" part of it disappears, pretty much.
3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Powertrip (841) - Calgary, Alberta, CANADA - APR 7, 2011
Single bottle purchased in Vernon, BC on 03/10/2011. Colour: Deep, deep, deep red with creamy low head that is a touch brownish and grey. Nose: Rubber, tar, mint, eraser, brown sugar, cooked oats. Lot’s going on but not great chemistry. Taste: Medium sweet, light bitter, light sour. Immediate mint hint, black tea leaves follow. Hmm...more like a light roast coffee addition instead of chocolate. Sweet corn mid-palate. Finish is a touch smokey with some char and more mint. Different and not entirely undrinkable.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 fiulijn (10383) - Como, ITALY - MAR 29, 2011
Draught at St. Augustine’s, Vancouver Dark brown color. Light chocolate and mint aroma. Roasted malt flavor, with light dark chocolate tones, and a more evident mint touch; dry mouthfeel; roasted malts in the finish. After Eight chocolates are better, as they are sweeter; but not a bad beer...
2.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20 presario (4133) - Stampede City, Alberta, CANADA - MAR 20, 2011
Bottle. Brown beer with a nice froth. Smells like an "After 8" chocolate mint as advertised. First sip is wierd. A bit metallic, a bit of smoke, chocolate and mint. I think to do this experiment properly you need to add mint to a thick chocolately porter or brown ale. This one is too tame to carry the flavours. Overall described as metallic mint with a chocolate aftertaste.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Vertical Bacon Strips (1698) - Asshat, Alberta, CANADA - MAR 9, 2011
Well, what the hell. The last beer disappointed so I figured that I would continue the trend. Deep red brown pour with a thumb thick light brown fizzy cap that faded out to a ring. Shitloads of strong minty chocolate as advertised. There is also some roast and a touch of herbal and some cld coffee in the background aaaaaand that’s about it. The taste is likewise huge with mint chocolate, duller coffee, roast, weakest of bitterness - almost out of batteries on my phone. Tasty stuff, good frisky carbs, very good finish. I like! Go figure.
