Draught @ Alibi Room, Vancouver, BC
Pours dark brown, almost black with a smooth head. Aroma of roasty malts, grassy hops, coffee, dark chocolate and licorice. Taste is roasty, sweetish and grassy hoppy with some coffee, licorice and dark chocolate. Finish is smooth, hoppy and roasty with some licorice. Quite tasty black IPA.

650mL bottle, pours black with a medium beige / tan head. Aroma is quite chalky, with notes of roast, dry cocoa, and some piney hops. Flavour is really wonderful, with notes of roasted malt, dry cocoa, and lots of dry piney hops. Really dry and balanced amazingly well between the roast and hops. Wow, Dead Frog brewed an excellent one here. Fantastic.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bomber. Clear darkest crimson brown, slight ruby hue, darker tan foam mostly fades. Big bold dark roasted malt taste, not too sweet, some caramel, balanced nicely with tropical fruity citrusy hops, slightly floral, some spicy herbalness. Average carbonation, medium-full bodied, well hopped. Lightly bitter, dry roasty finish. Pretty damn good, but still: NFL (Not For Lagerboys)

650 ml bottle. Pours a very dark brown with moderate head of big bubbles. Aromas of fruity grape jelly, light pine, and toasted malts. Flavors of roasted malts, mangos, dark fruit, and pine. Bitter finish. A nice black IPA.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Dark brown body. The aroma has a mango-citrus hop character, and toasty dark malt notes. Rich, rounded bitterness, but also a lot of malt sweetness especially from the Belgian stuff. The roast barley is quite apparent, particularly in the finish. The bright citrus and fruit of the aroma takes a back seat on the palate. Rich, hearty bitterness, smooth body...a blast of Black IPA goodness, quite intense for lovers of the style. Like me.

with Republica Coffee Roasterís Yirgacheffe (a smooth and slightly fruity roast), dry-hopped with Galaxy and an addition of Bourbon-soaked, toasted American oak
Black color with compact beige head. Delicate aroma with more fruity tones. Smooth mouthfeel; some more chocolate and less roastiness than the other versions, some vanilla, oak, biscuits, spices, cappuccino; moderate, pleasant sweetness; lingering fruity presence. Although hidden by the dark malts, there are nice hop resins in the final. The elements are in harmony, and itís well balanced.
Fresh, highly drinkable, excellent.

with Centennial hops, vanilla/Bourbon-soaked cacao nibs, sweet orange peel and chipotle pepper
Black color with compact head.
Roasted malt aroma, a bit dusty, fruity, and some chipotle. Lean mouthfeel; roasted malt flavor, some chocolate; the chipotle is a bit too strong; the bourbon and cocoa very light.
The chili hotness is spoiling the good beer.

Black color with creamy beige head. Strong aroma of freshly brewed boutique coffee. Smooth and dry mouthfeel; strong flavor of roasted malts, some coffee, hidden biscuits, some spices; strong bitterness with abrasive hop resins. Some creamy feeling in the final.
Not a big fan of the style, but itís a very good example of it.
