Tap at the brewery. Pours a dark brown color with a ring of tan head. Aroma is caramel malts, lots of hops and a slight burnt character. Flavor is mostly dark malts, hops and charred caramel. Not a fan.

(draught) deep brown, creamy dark tan head and nice lacing. Nose of chocolate malt, grapefruit, bit of pine, and brown sugar. Taste of chocolate malt, pine, light orange pulp and cola root. Medium body and nice cola-like carbonation. Great black IPA.

At brewery tasting in standard pint. Poured black and opaque with just a little head. Good aroma, good body, hop is there but not overpowering. Balanced and enjoyable. Went well with the Grilled Cheese sandwich. IPA is not my favorite style but still enjoyed this a lot.

On tap at the brewery’s grand opening party. The beer pours a dark brown to black color with a small tan head. The aroma is has a lot of roasted and light chocolate malts, with a little bit of pine also thrown in. The flavor is very similar. There are some nice pine and orange notes from the hops, but they are balanced and complimented by the chocolate and roasted malts. The bitterness is low to medium. Medium, creamy mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A good Black IPA.

foduck (328) - Denton, Texas, USA - FEB 14, 2012
Pours black with tan head. Smells like molasses and dark malts. Flavor is pretty flat and blah. Not a strong hop presence for an IPA. Finishes just a little roasty and boring.

On tap. Pours black with rich tan head. Aroma is a mix of pine, earth and dark roast, didn’t appeal to me. Flavor is very nice though, semi sweet, hints of chocolate, dark roasted grain with hints of pine and subtle citrus, notes of earthiness, subtle bitter with a very faint hint of butterscotch. Medium mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Overall, I very much enjoyed this brew.

(Draught) Pours an opaque dark brown (near black) body with a medium cream head. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, grapefruit, and caramel. Flavor of grapefruit, chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, orange, and caramel with a dry, bitter finish. Nice balance of chocolate malts and hops. Easily one of the best Black IPAs I have tried.
