Our year round ode to the Pacific Northwest hop. At DEBC, we like hops, but we like American hops most of all. Here we use some of our absolute favorites. However, they might not be used like you may expect, by using varieties with high alpha acid contents (which means more potential for bitterness) and using them in ways to emphasize the flavor and aroma we can render a rather bitter ale with over the top tropical fruit, citrus, pine, floral, and more hop derived aroma and flavor. Style: American-style India Pale Ale Hops: Citra, Amarillo, Chinook, Palisade, and Summit Malts: Pale Ale, Vienna, Honey, and White Wheat Yeast: English Ale

Extra from Errl-thanks, Chris! Deep orange with a slow fading finger thick head and lots of lacing. Nose is fairly flat with a bit of earthiness and orange. Pretty malty full body with some orange, red clay earth, and a long bitter finish with a lot of cereal/biscuit....what came to mind was when you have Corn Pops and there are little ones in the box that get over-toasted? Yeah, like that. Quite an odd little beer.

12 ounce can. Pours a mostly clear copper color with a large white head. A nice nose of biscuit, caramel and fruit. Smooth flavors with some pineapple, oranges, orange peel. some light pine, yeasty dry, light biscuit. Very nice.

12 oz can into a teku. Thanks Cody! Pours a hazy orange body with a finger of white foam. Really nice lacing and retention. Aroma is orange juice heavy with a dry powdery note on the finish. Bitter and very citric with just a touch of crackery malts. Taste is similar with loads of juicy oranges and a dry chalky thing that I also get in fresh Maine Lunch. Finishes with biscuity malts and a very low level of bitterness. This is a damn good IPA and Iím glad its not a huge bitter bomb. Extremely juicy with a pleasing level of malts and a powdery dry finish. Awesome!

UPDATED: JUL 26, 2013 Re-rating a fresh can of this because itís totally different from my draft experience nearly two months ago. Granted, that draft batch was likely brewed shortly after the departure of their head brewer, so the fluctuation in quality isnít too surprising.

Dark amber pour; plenty of tan/manila head and solid retention. Piney, earthy hops comprise the nose and seep deeply into the palate too. Fresh, tasty, floral hops coat my tongue with their smooth venom. Subtle notes of dried fruit, pine, bubblegum (mild), and just enough resin to remind you itís an IPA. Carbonation level is slightly lower than normal, which makes it damn near perfect in my book.

Delicious, and *totally* different from my last experience. No signs of that odd hop pellet anomaly. Single IPAs usually arenít my thing, but Iím gonna go grab another can of this right now.

*** Original review from 6/1/2013: On tap at the brewery. Heard lots of good things about this, giving it a shot even though I generally dislike Single IPAs.

Dark amber pour, plenty of white head, good retention. Big grain aroma: smells like barley and hop pellets. Yeah, definitely pellets. Odd.

These flavors seep onto the palate, augmented by a blast of resinous hops. Citra is nonexistent, overwhelmed by the piney Chinook and Amarillo. Good amount of grain, though it tastes unmalted. Doesnít bite much at the end, however, which is the only criterion keeping this from being a shining example of a West Coast IPA.

I understand why others like it, but this isnít for me.

Got in a trade with Cyde. 12 ounce can into tulip glass, no canning date. Pours very hazy and cloudy orange amber color with a 2 finger fairly dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of huge grapefruit, tangerine, orange rind, lemon zest, orange zest, pineapple, floral, grass, honey, bread, light pine, and floral earthiness. Outstanding aromas with big citrus hop complexity with a moderate malt balance; and nice strength. Taste of big grapefruit, orange zest, tangerine, orange rind, lemon zest, pineapple, floral, pine, grass, honey, bread, and floral earthiness. Good amount of pine resin bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes citrus, citrus zest, citrus rind, floral, pine, grass, honey, bread, and floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity and balance of citrus/floral/pine hop flavors; with a fair amount of malt balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and moderately sticky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent IPA! Great hop flavor complexity and moderate malt balance; and very easy to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bright cloudy orange color with a bright white head... Itís a bright beer! Sweet, bready aroma with citrusy hops decorating. Itís awesome in the mouth, meaty, but soft and slick, with a soft but distinctive hop flavor. Yeast helps soften, I think. Love it.

Can from trade with Crajun. Pours a cloudy golden orange color with a small fizzy head that quickly fades, grabs the edges nicely when swirled, looks oily. Very nice aroma of tropical fruit, oranges, pine, and grapefruit. Taste is packed with pineapple, oranges, pine, honey, and grapefruit. Good stuff here. Slight sweetness up front with a strong bitter finish. Smooth juicy finish. Thin to medium body, slightly oily and fizzy mouthfeel. Very nice IPA.

Orange copper pour. Mild haziness. Medium whit head and lots of lacing. Piney floral hop aroma. Flavor is very similar. Lots of citra and chinook hop presence. A little spice. Bitter and dry finish. ---Rated via iPhone

Deep amber ipa with a smell reminiscent of a hop draped pineapple in the piney woods. Very bitter yet sweet taste that lingers...The aroma overpowers the taste. Overall though this is a good ipa. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
