UPDATED: JUN 20, 2014 Poured from growler purchased at brewery. Very heady aroma of I’m not sure what. Pours a big tan head that calms down after a while. Opaque mahogany. Caramel, nut, hops, wood, ginger, veggie in flavor. Slightly off aftertaste, but very drinkable. Pretty good.

On tap... somewhere. Poured into a pint glass. Dark clear color, like a nut brown ale but lighter. Nice molasses smell. No head at all and no lacing. Clean, dry mouthfeel with rather little body, but that’s not bad at all; makes it easy to drink. Tastes smokey with molasses, toffee, and a slight sour undertone. Excellent beer. I really like dark lagers and I’m glad to have tried this one. Perfect session beer; I wish I could get it easier!

Location: Sampled at the NY Brewfest on Governor’s Island, 6/19/10

Aroma: The nose is mostly toasted and cereal malts
Appearance: Pours a hazy, dark reddish color with a fluffy head
Flavor: The flavor is pretty good, a nice cereal/grain feel to it with just a touch of hops
Palate: The body drinks really nicely, with a solid mouthfeel
Overall Impression: Overall, I thought this was a pretty good beer. A nice looking amber beer with a good flavor and a nice mouthfeel. Solid and enjoyable. I liked both of the Defiant beers that I tried at the festival.

Pours a light copper. Nose is malty and rye. Flavor follows the nose. Nice malt and rye flavors. Finish is dry solid session beer. Some chocolate notes. Nice.

Everything that a lager should be. Goes down very smooth, finishes clean, well-balanced with a very tiny kick at the end. Extremely sessionable, if I can find more around, it could be a favorite this summer.

Draft. Pours amber with an off white head. Light floral hoppy aroma. The flavor has some crisp hoppy notes, some floral notes and a light sweetness. Decent.

Draft. Pours an amber body with an off white head. Bitter dry and nutty with a strange chemical note, very odd. Bread y a bit metallic with some toasted malt and a mild nutty malt tone. Eh.

I received a corked and caged bottle from a trade with a ratebeerian. This thing had a lot of carbonation! The head took a while to settle down. The color was a ruddy brown. The smell was stinky, like a muddy creek. The taste was a standard lager taste to me. Decent beer but i couldn’t get past the smell. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 03-27-2007 15:55:47

Tap at Barcade. Biscuity, weak aroma, a little mint and berry in there. The flavor picks up, with bright orange jam, biscuit, lettuce, and cookie. Tasty.

Tap at Barcade. Deep amber pour. The nose is quite clean with a touch of light caramel and toasted malt. A little bit cereally with an unusual fruitiness on the back that seems to be malt derived. It’s fairly strange, but pretty tasty.
