4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Lou18 (1353) - West Paterson, USA - FEB 20, 2007
Had this on tap, at brewery. Nice and dark, red highlights. The nose was chocolate and roasted malts, the mouth feel was mid-to full. There was a slight lactic tinge, but I viewed it as a complement. This was a excellent brewery. Not to sweet or dry.

From notes. Off cask 4/2007 at Spuyten Duyvil if memory serves correct. Pours pitch black with a dark tan/brown head. Nose is pretty mild. Not much going on here. Flavor is milder and smooth. More of a sweet tone with an underlying bitter edge. Feel is thick on liquid and low on bubble. Definitely drinkable. A smooth stout that delivers a calm experience.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 JoeMcPhee (6966) - Toronto, ON, Ontario, CANADA - MAR 24, 2007
Cask at Hop Devil Grill. Opaque dark black beer with a thin tan, creamy head. The aroma is very sweet and chocolatey. Soft chocolate and coffee roastiness. A bit of sweet caramel and lightly toasted malts in the back as well. The flavour is decent, sweet malts, chocolate and caramel. The body is quite full with a fairly chewy sweetness throughout. Some soft blackberry/cherry fruitiness. Lingering dark roast helps balance the sweetness.

Pours black, faint roasted aroma. It is very sweet, tastes like red licorice. It goes down smooth but it has an aftertaste.

Cask at Brazen Head. Dark brown. A pruney/dark raisin nose on top of the dark roast malt aromas. Dark roast, almost burnt coffee flavor with some bittersweet chocolate and a bit of a sour cherry-like finish. Nice and full. Pretty good overall I thought.

On cask at HDG. Dark brown in color with a nice thick off white head. Roasty and chocolatety aroma. Roasty malty flavor with some lactic notes. Coffee like roasty notes. Medium bodied. Creamy and smooth mouthfeel. Finish is chocolatety. Decent beer.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 jimmack (1221) - Nutley, New Jersey, USA - FEB 21, 2007
Had a couple of samples of this at the brewery. Dark brown, almost black in color with a medium sized beige head. Roasty, chocolatey aroma with a hint of smoke. Dark roasted malt flavor was a bit on the mild side, with a somewhat off-putting lactic sourness in the background. Mild coffee and some chocolate round out the flavors. Medium bodied, with a nice creamy texture. Would have gotten a solid 4.0 from me if not for the sourness, which I am not a fan of in stouts.
