DocLock (4083), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 27, 2007 Thanks to Lou18 for this. Deep brownish blackish pour with 1-finger, creamy tan head and fantastic concentric lace rings. The aroma is roasty dark malt, chocoff, prunes, molasses, some hops. Tastes roasty dark malty, with some chocolate notes, slight coffee, molasses, slight rauchiness, and some finishing hops. Complex, well balanced, and bottle conditioned, this is one I will seek out in the future. JoeMcPhee (3671), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Jul 19, 2008 Cask at Ginger Man. Deep brown-black beer, aroma is lightly sour and tart with a kiss of cocoa. Flavour is thin and fairly sour with a tartness and a lightly oxidized maltiness. Toasted malts and fairly thin body. Long lingering lactic finish. Meh, this might have been good, but not in this condition. Eyedrinkale (3102), Beer Town, New York, USA Nov 24, 2007 Draft at brewery. Not much in the head retention area, with flavors of malt, chocolate and fresh grains. Not much else going on. Kinda of sweet not too smoky. Dickinsonbeer (2512), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA Mar 2, 2007 Pours a deep dark brown and a thin foamy tan head. Aroma is moslty chocolate and a bit yeasty. Moderatley sweet flavor, some dark chocolate bitterness, more dirty yeast, doughy, and bready, with a drying lightly acrid finish and low bitterness. Ok. kramer (1864), sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 30, 2007 25 oz bottle, via Lou18. The bottle reads that this was primed with IPA. Pours a dark brown colored body with some dark chestnut edges under a large and growing foamy brown head that climbed out of my snifter. Aroma is quite hoppy for a Porter, fighting for supremacy over the chocolate and roasted malts. Some lighter cocoa powder, coffee, yeast, and maybe a hint of alcohol. The flavor is mostly caramel and roast with a chocolaty note. Finishes with a pretty aggressive hoppy bitterness that lingers quite long. A little coffee, burnt malt, dark chocolate, and a dose of yeast that emerges late in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a texture that almost approaches creamy but the fizzy, slightly wild, carbonation prevents it. This was a little unusual for a Porter, with the fairly aggressive hoppiness, but I think that it had something to do with the way that this beer was bottled, using the IPA as the primer. The ratings from tap don’t seem to be quite as prominant with the hops. All in all, it was still a very enjoyable beer. Looking forward to trying my other Defiant brews!
