37.5cl bottle courtesy of 77ships @ Belgian RB Gathering of Ultimate Evil. BB 14/09/2013.

375mL bottle, pours a dark mahogany with a small beige / tan head. Nose brings out intensely cherry-dominated, some light funk and an artificial quality. Flavour brings out intensely sweet cherries that dominate. Almost too much sweetness here - not quite to the point of cloying, but this is far from elegant. This being a 2011 bottle, it hasn’t faded in its cherry character, but it’s still nothing very special. The more you drink, the more artificial and unbearably sweet this gets. Not very good.

A steady pour into my teku glass produces two finger thick, tightly beaded, pink tinged, dirty tan colored head. The beer is a ruddy, concentrated red color that shows a lightly hazed, red hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells of butter poached cherries (more cherries than butter), as well as having a finish that leans a touch towards musty and metallic.

The beer is sweet, more so toward the finish, but is not overly cloying. The sweet cherry notes dominate, and the cherries do not seem to have the depth and floral spiciness that really good krieks have, but the cherry notes are still nice enough. The body is somewhat light, definitely refreshing, and strikes a good balance between chewy and light. There is a touch of buttery character to the finish, and it melds well with the cherry character; it does not really seem to be diacetyl / pedio related, and I wonder if it is the cherries that are somehow providing this flavor.

Pretty simplistic in the end; definitely a cherry beer, though not as sweet as New Glarus Kriek (which is a good thing), it does remind me quite a bit of that beer.
