COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Colour and sight: Dark brown-red. A compact white-yellow, stable and lacing head. Scent: Touches of caramel, mocha and chocolate. Spices such as liquorice and coriander are also present. Flavour: Initially, a very good mouthfeel of alcohol and softness. This is followed by an increasing bitterness, partially from the hop, but also from the roasted malt and chocolate malt. Towards the end a nice balance between bitterness, sour and sweet.

Chic aubergine in color but speckled with unattractive flakes of yeast and topped in a common cream foam. The nose is light and sweet but carries a distinct depth emphasized by hints of coffee and cream underlaying the fruity-spicy combination of grape juice, cassis and cherry with hazelnut, anise and allspice. The flavor is disappointingly shallow, showing a bland mixture of coffee, cream, licorice and pepper all tied together in a heavy wooden box. I remember fruit (particularly blackcurrant) making a more distinct appearance on the tongue in the few sips I stole from a friend long ago. The palate seems slightly off-balance with a fizzy carbonation and a hint of smoked salmon lingering after the swallow. A neat little beer, but perhaps better fresh.

This is a very good beer, top 10 in my book. Earthy & hoppy smell, although a bit faint. Large but diminshing head. Flavor is woody carmel with hints of berries. Very complex flavor with prominant yeast and hops. But, the flavor is ripped away too quickly due to the apparent added carbonation (also screws up the head). Nonetheless...YUM!

Bottled. Amber colour with a huge mostly lasting beige creamy head. Rich aroma and taste of malts, fruits, chocolate with some bitterness. Good beer, even better palate.

UPDATED: DEC 22, 2006 330 ml bottle, labelled 8.5%. This drowsy beauty burst from the bottle when awoken, gushing until quickly captured in a goblet. Her outburst quickly subsided, collapsing into a soft white lacy heap. Moving closer I could feel her breath upon me, reeking of rich malty sweetness, with promising hint of forbidden fruit. Still upset from being disturbed, her dark auburn eyes flash, yet I can see they are mottled with suspended fluffy impurities, the result of a rude awakening. I drink in the sharp spicy edge of her malty annoyance which quickly fades into a foamy dry stare. Good night my lady, sleep well in the comforting darkness of my warming belly.

the deep brown pour reveals a beer that at first glance, looks unfiltered. the head is a dense foamy two inches, and it really sustains for the first half of the tasting. i love the look of the ceramic bottle. the aromas reveal a nougat and chocolate marshmallow that resembles the mouthfeel of Young’s DC Stout. Also in the nose there is a nice floral hoppy character, which i assume is mirrored in the flavor and on the palate. let’s see With the faintest touch of light citrus and raisins, Nocturnum presents flavors of spicy hops (resembling Tremens), chocolate, caramel, and even a touch of butterscotch. This beer is playing tricks on my eyes. everything i have learned tells me this beer should not look this dark, nor produce such a sustained head. Spicy hops coat the palate, leaving a rather short finish. Complex indeed... Regardless, this is a very drinkable beer, and this, hands down, makes me want to rethink Delirium’s magnificent brewing capabilities.

UPDATED: DEC 6, 2006 12 oz. Bottle: Cloudy foggy brown color with a tan head. The aroma is banana bread and yeast. The taste is sweet malts, red wine and some sort of polish. As it warms up, there is also flavors of honey in the taste and finish. Nice.

A sipping style that is most appropriate for consumption at Café Het Gol Bel. Dark chocolate brown with a thin fizzy head that shows surprisingly good retention. Big fruity malty nose – this beer’s intentions are very clear. Some alcohol sweetness wafts up. Wall of malt and alcohol sweetness, with licorice and aniseed, drives through the palate. Perhaps one of those rare instances where a beer drinks heavier that what the stated ABV suggests. Finishes long with meaty, cooked malt flavours. (e4.0 @ Café Het Gol Bel)
